Bobby, a name bequeathed to him by Olivia, the other star of the program Olivia (for whom Ash would die), is an amnesiac Bob-omb Mario and Olivia come across on their way to Autumn Mountain. He enrolls in hopes that travelling with the celebration will jump-start his memory. Ultimately, through the explosion of some fireworks, Bobby remembers who he is and how he lost his memory. Not long after, in a moment of heroic valor, he sacrifices his very life to conserve Olivias. It is fair to say that left us with some feelings.
The best feature of the Paper Mario franchise is its determination to take a peek into the internal lives of characters that are generally simply gunk at the bottom of Marios boots. For todays VG Chat, Ari and Ash talk about the very best character of Paper Mario: The Origami King, a little Bob-omb with a dream, Bobby.

Ari Notis: Theres truly just one thing to go over: Lets discuss Bobby the Bob-Omb. How bad does your heart hurt?

Ash Parrish: Ari, it injures SO BAD. When Bobby was talking to Mario about how Bob-ombs got ta make an effect … A couple of goon tears slipped.
Ari: Yes, that line! “This is what every Bob-Omb wishes for– an opportunity to alter something for the much better. To make an impact.” And after that he has that pun, right, where he calls the experience a blast? I think its the first and just father joke in this game that didnt make me groan.
Ash: From as much as we can inform up until now, Im pleased they have not. You called it Nintendos “Ned Stark minute.”
Ari: Its like that? Bobbys dead! What d you feel seeing his ghost in the consequences?
Some previous Paper Mario video games had these truly unique character styles. Do you think Bobbys generic character style heightened or moistened the disaster here?
He looks and feels no different than the fifty leven Bob-ombs youve experienced as Mario over the years. Thats what provides such fantastic strength to his character, that he has this wealth of a life with friends and desires in spite of being such a rote, run-of-the-mill, Mario baddie. Ill understand Ill never ever think of them the same method and be reluctant to kick them whenever I play a regular Mario video game again.
Ash: Afeared, for one, that it wasnt going to be a ghost and just be him back. But Im happy they put him in. Mario looks like an emotionless chud and required assistance on how to get things back on track.
Ari: And was able to get it from the video games real hero. Stunning. Youve told me before that you would go to war for Olivia. As much as youre in pain– Im right there with you– do you believe Bobbys sacrifice was worth it?
Ash: Now, I know we both are extremely near, but havent yet finished the video game, so there may be time yet for us to discover out what truly happens in the end. Were you scared, like I was, that Nintendo, being ever Nintendo, would undervalue this moment by instantly withdrawing it?
Ari: I was. Not that I didnt want to see Bobby once again!
Ari: Thats real– she really is irrepressibly cheerful, which I guess is baked into her character. Olivia is more or less the players cipher, since Mario never ever speaks and rarely emotes. Her moving on so quickly kind of cheapens Bobbys sacrifice a little.

Ash: He is. Its a Nintendo video game, and Mario at that, but I wish we got to invest more time with Olivia and her grief. I mean, it might be utilized to say to kids playing, “Hey, its fine to be unfortunate, improve, however be unfortunate again.”
Ari: Yeah, she kinda simply proceeds, doesnt she?
Ash: She gets one minute of sadness, Mario puts on a wacky hat, then she understands, “Oh Bobby would not desire me to be sad.” And I think thats reasonable. Its in her character to be the “oooh glossy” type of individual, particularly given what we know about her origin (which i simply struck and HO MAN THAT WAS A LOT).
Ash: OH SHIT! I didnt even believe of it like that. Definitely baller.
Ari: So baller. Ash, I think Bobby is the real hero of this video game.
Bobby, in addition to informing Mario, “Hey, simply trust me, I have this thing that will completely conserve Olivia,” likewise covertly pulls Mario on a quest of revenge– and then effectively enacts that vengeance! Is that the most rewarding Mario story … ever?

One thing about the Paper Mario series that Kohler (RIP to a legend) touched on in his evaluation was that this series provides us a possibility to see the silent and otherwise unnoticeable internal lives of all these “minions” Mario has actually stomped for 30 years now.

Ari: Oh, yeah, Im already feeling the negative effects. My buddies and I play a Smash video game mode in which we just use dynamites, including Bob-Ombs. And today I couldnt bring myself to throw any Bob-Ombs, so I ended up losing whenever! (And thats the only reason I lost btw. I wouldve conveniently won otherwise. Obviously. No need to push that …) But yeah, its so interesting to see the within lives of all the rank-and-file Mario goons. You mentioned previously that quest that Bobby drags Mario on to find the fuse. Can we talk about that for a second?
Ash: If Im remembering correctly, he goes on a cruise with his other bomb good friends and brings with him the fuse of among his exploded buddies, a sort of keepsake like, “See, Charles, I told you I was gon na do it. Simply want you woulda been here to see it?”
Ash: If Bobby is the hero, Olivia is the star, right? He did what he did for her, not the world, but for her clearly. That shes able to continue on, meet her creator, and continue to make joyful memories. Yeah, it was worth it.
More Paper Mario: The Origami King
Ash: You know what made me really lose it? The quest to discover his fuse. Which turned out not to be his fuse but the fuse of a fallen comrade. Like how much can you hurt me Nintendo.
