They will be headed to Boston, as the Red Sox came back from a 5-1 deficit to beat the Nationals by the score of 7-5. At the moment, it will be a matchup of All-Stars, as Gerrit Cole will get the ball for the Yankees and Nathan Eovaldi for the Red Sox.
MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: Prior to yesterday’s game, the Yankees announced that infielder DJ LeMahieu was headed to the injured list, as the coaching staff felt that he was “too compromised” to effectively play. Although the team hopes that he should be available for a potential ALCS or World Series (assuming they get that far, of course), his loss is a big blow to the team at the worst possible time of the year. In the meantime, Rougned Odor, Tyler Wade, and Andrew Velazquez will split LeMahieu’s playing time, mixing and matching based on the matchup.
MLB Trade Rumors | Darragh McDonald: Shortly after announcing that LeMahieu would be sent to the shelf, the team announced that Luke Voit was being transferred to the 60-day IL, officially ending the first baseman’s season. To fill that empty spot on the roster, Brody Koerner was selected to the 40-man roster. Despite a solid season for Triple-A Scranton — a 3.78 ERA in 75 innings — don’t expect to see Koerner pitch for the Yankees this October; if he does, that means that a lot had gone right (because they’ve advanced at least one round, if not more), but it also means that a lot had gone wrong (because he’s only going to be added to the roster after multiple injuries).
