Liverpool have collected “substantial evidence” after opening an investigation into Manchester City’s allegation that a fan allegedly spat at their bench during the second half of Sunday’s Premier League draw.
The Athletic understands that the club have taken a number of witness statements following Manchester City’s complaints after the match.
Liverpool could implement a lifetime ban if somebody is found guilty of the offence, while spitting directly at another person can potentially lead to criminal charges.
Liverpool said in a statement on Monday: “Following a complaint of a serious alleged incident near the dugout area at Anfield during the second half of Sunday’s game against Manchester City, we are conducting a full investigation, working with all relevant parties including Manchester City, to gather evidence from individuals who witnessed the incident as well as analysing all available video footage.
“The evidence collected to date is substantial and, if requested to do so, will be handed to Merseyside Police given the potential for criminal charges.
“This case will also be subject to the Club’s Official Sanctions Process.
“Anfield is our home and we will ensure it is a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone attending and will not allow unacceptable isolated behaviour to impact on our Club’s values and principles.”
Speaking about the incident after the game, City manager Pep Guardiola said: “I didn’t see it, people told me.
“If this happened, I am pretty sure Liverpool FC is going to take measures against this person.
“I know Liverpool are greater than this behaviour. At every club, people make bad actions because of emotions, but you have to control yourself.”
The thrilling match ended in a 2-2 draw, with a late strike from Kevin De Bruyne cancelling out Mohamed Salah’s stunning individual goal.
