It was a tale of 2 halves for Tennessee fans on Saturday night.
The Volunteers faithful were widely praised during the 1st half for creating what was an electric atmosphere against No. 13 Ole Miss.
Things unraveled in the 2nd half, however.
Tennessee fans cheered wildly when Rebels quarterback Matt Corral went down with a 4th-quarter injury injury, but the low point was the crowd littering the field with debris after a questionable spot on a 4th down play late in the game that led to an extended delay.
The Vols ultimately got the ball the ball back but were unable score in the closing seconds, losing 31-26.
The scene left college football analysts and fans disgusted and drew strong reactions from both the SEC and Tennessee officials.
SEC analyst and renowned radio personality Paul Finebaum chimed in Sunday morning with his thoughts as well.
“I thought it was classless and unconscionable behavior,” Finebaum said on ESPN’s SportsCenter. “It was an absolute disgrace. And I realize this — as everyone does, in a stadium of 100,000-plus, this was not just a handful. It was maybe a couple hundred. But that’s one too many. The idea that somebody would throw a golf ball and nearly hit Lane Kiffin — bottles, mustard packages, it’s hard to wrap your arms around what a bad and ugly look that was for the University of Tennessee.”
The Volunteers dropped to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play after the disappointing loss. They will return to action next Saturday with a road game at Alabama.
