Lukaku and Werner injured in 4-0 Chelsea win, will miss some days – The Athletic

Chelsea attackers Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner were both forced off with injuries during the first-half of Chelsea’s 4-0 Champions League win over Malmo.

Manager Thomas Tuchel believes that the pair will each miss “some days”, which threatens their availability for the weekend’s game against Norwich.

Romelu Lukaku’s ankle buckled after a clumsy challenge from Malmo defender Lasse Nielsen inside the penalty area, while Werner limped off with a hamstring injury in first-half added time.

Two penalties from Jorginho, plus goals from Andreas Christensen and Kai Havertz, gave Chelsea an otherwise comfortable victory.

After the game Tuchel said: “I can tell you what you probably also saw, we had a twist of the ankle with Romelu, and a muscle injury in the hamstring with Timo. They will be some days out I guess.

“Normally we are in a good place injury-wise, we had only Christian Pulisic out, but we miss everybody, we have a lot of games to play, a lot of competitions, so we need to find solutions, there are no excuses.

“The two were in good shape, they are dangerous, they can create and score so now we need to find solutions and guys who waited for their chance need to step up, whoever it might be.

“The race is on, and the guys who will start against Norwich next game have our trust, and we will start to find new solutions, and like I said, let’s stay positive. We won games before without Timo and we won games before without Romelu.

“We don’t want to have these problems too often but it happens, it’s during a season, you cannot hide from the fact that this happens.”
