Eagles-Raiders snap count analysis – Bleeding Green Nation

Time to analyze the Philadelphia Eagles’ snap counts from their Week 7 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

  • Outside of garbage time, the Eagles scored seven points. This despite having their starting quarterback and starting offensive line for most of the game.
  • Following the Zach Ertz trade, Dallas Goedert led all Eagles skill players in playing time at 93%. That easily topped his previous season high snap count at 74% in Week 4. He was Philly’s leading receiving with three catches for 70 yards. Also caught a two-point conversion.
  • DeVonta Smith led the Eagles in targets with nine. He caught five of them for 61 yards. Smith could’ve done more damage with fewer inaccurate passes from Jalen Hurts.
  • Lane Johnson left the game early in the fourth quarter and didn’t return. No word on what kept him out. Perhaps a conditioning issue in his first game back after missing three weeks?
  • Jalen Reagor didn’t have an offensive touch until garbage time. He had a nice leaping grab for a catch-and-run touchdown. Would be nice to see something like that when the game isn’t already over.
  • No good reason for Quez Watkins to be playing fewer snaps than Reagor and, yet, it’s still happening. At least Watkins saw twice as many targets.
  • Kenneth Gainwell ran five times for 20 yards and caught four of his eight targets for 41 yards and one touchdown. The score came on Philly’s opening drive. Gainwell also fumbled in a crucial spot to give the Raiders a 10-point lead entering halftime.
  • Miles Sanders’ injury opened the door for Boston Scott to finally see some playing time and touches. Scott’s seven carries only went for 24 yards (3.4 average) and one garbage time touchdown. Scott had a sole reception for five yards. He might continue to see the bulk of the carries if Sanders misses more time. Gainwell has been ahead of him on the depth chart but the rookie isn’t a volume runner.
  • Greg Ward hasn’t contributed much to the Eagles on offense this season outside of two garbage time touchdowns. Hasn’t seen a target since Week 4.
  • Jack Stoll is TE2 with Ertz gone. But the Eagles are really only using one tight end most of the time.
  • Andre Dillard came in to play left tackle with Jordan Mailata shifting over to the right side when Johnson left early.
  • JJAW left the game in the third quarter with a back injury.
  • Dick Rod played in his first game with the Eagles this season after being temporarily elevated from the practice squad. He was TE3. Just a placeholder until Tyree Jackson is ready to be activated from injured reserve.

  • Marcus Epps got the start at safety with Anthony Harris missing Sunday’s game.
  • Rodney McLeod played 100% of the Eagles’ defensive snaps for the first time all season. He previously played 72% in each of his last three games, perhaps due to being on a pitch count.
  • Derek Barnett has yet to produce a sack this season. He has just one in his last 12 games.
  • Fletcher Cox had two tackles and no other stats. His postgame comments clearly indicate he’s not thrilled about his role in this defense.
  • Javon Hargrave has been held without a sack in back-to-back games but he did have a quarterback hit that forced Carr into his interception.
  • Josh Sweat had a quarterback hit that forced one of Derek Carr’s three incompletions. You read that right: just THREE incompletions. I mean, seriously, what the hell is this defense doing. Anyway, back to Sweat, he should be playing more than Barnett.
  • Avonte Maddox continues to have a quality season in the slot.
  • The Eagles play a lot of different linebackers and none of them are really any good. Alex Singleton’s playing time decreased for the third straight week. Davion Taylor saw a career-high in snap percentage.
  • Milton Williams got banged up in the third quarter. Williams has zero sacks, zero quarterback hits, and zero tackles for loss so far as a rookie. Tom Donahoe vindication!
  • Ryan Kerrigan posted no stats yet again. He has one tackle in 171 snaps played. Trade him for whatever you can get or just cut him if you have to. He’s not providing anything and he’s not a long-term piece. No need to have him taking away snaps from young guys like Williams and/or Tarron Jackson.
  • Andre Chachere logged his first and only defensive snap of the season.

  • Elijah Riley played his first snaps of the season after being temporarily elevated from the practice squad.
  • Rick Lovato seemingly made it through the game without any issues despite being limited in practice all week.
  • Not pictured in the screenshot: Nate Herbig and Brett Toth each logged two ST snaps.

INACTIVE: Anthony Harris, Jack Anderson, Gardner Minshew, Marlon Tuipulotu, Sua Opeta, Tay Gowan, Mac McCain

ACTIVE: Joe Flacco

  • There isn’t much point in benching Hurts right now; the Eagles have to keep playing him to see what they have in him. But if the team wanted to turn up the heat on him, they could start keeping Minshew active for games. They’re on track to reach a point where Minshew should be active over Flacco anyway. There’s no point in watching the latter play if the team is really bad and out of the playoff picture.
  • Gowan was inactive for his first game with the Eagles after being acquired in the Ertz trade.
