A busy few days on the awards circuit started Thursday night for Alabama quarterback Bryce Young.
A few days before the Heisman Trophy is presented in New York, Young took part in the College Football Awards show with a shot at being the most decorated player of the 2021 season.
Young claimed the Davey O’Brien Award to open the awards show held virtually for a second straight year. And the show ended with him claiming the Maxwell Award for the national player of the year.
Earlier on Thursday, Young was named Associated Press national player of the year. He came up short for the Walter Camp national player of the year award that went to Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III.
The sophomore from Pasadena lived up to his five-star expectations in his first year as Alabama’s starting quarterback. He completed 68% of his 462 passes in the first 13 games of his sophomore year with 43 touchdowns to four interceptions.
The Crimson Tide opened the season at No. 1, slipped after a midseason loss at Texas A&M before Saturday’s win over Georgia put Alabama back at No. 1 for the playoffs. Young had a lot to do with that by throwing for three touchdowns and 421 yards in a 41-24 win over then-No. 1 Georgia in the SEC Championship.
He’s the second straight Alabama winner of the Davey O’Brien Award after Mac Jones took it last year.
