The Good
– Harris was among the people responsible for Philadelphias horrible start on Tuesday night, however to his credit, he was also a huge part of digging them out of that hole.
It started with a stretch in the second quarter where Harris utilized a corner 3 as a springboard to 8 straight points, changing the tenor of the game for Philly. That jolt of self-confidence appeared to light a fire in not simply Harris, but the remainder of the group. They began getting their hands on loose balls, pushing a bit more on defense, and following Harris lead on the glass, where he developed extra belongings through effort alone.
The video game just looked easy for him in the third quarter. Harris was bodying people in the post, scoring over Kristaps Porzingis with touch, even weaponizing the extra attention his way to discover open teammates. It was, without any embellishment, a few of the most complete basketball weve seen from him in a Sixers uniform (and its definitely fair to keep in mind the setting).
One of the knocks against Harris as a go-to man is that his mentality doesnt constantly match his capability. He can get lost in the shuffle a bit in Phillys attempts to space the flooring around Embiid and Simmons, his value coming down to tearing down catch-and-shoot threes..
Games like these, even though theyre scrimmages, need to be a pointer to he and his colleagues that he can get on a roll if you offer him enough runway to do so.
– Al Horford was well on his way to having another stinker when he, like Harris, stepped up and altered the tenor of the video game. The Sixers have actually been talking a huge video game about their spirit and competitiveness in training camp, and Horford helped provide more credence to those concepts by taking the 2nd half of a meaningless skirmish seriously. His last line was still a bit ugly, however they do not install a resurgence without him.
Athletically, I do believe Horford looks closer to his old self than he did for the majority of the year. There were times where he had the ability to beat Kristaps Porzingis to areas on the floor and avoid drives before they happened, a big modification from the man we saw in the middle of this season.
His shooting touch will make all the distinction. As the backup center, shooting well is somewhat of a bonus. In the minutes hes playing next to Embiid, outside touch is important. Hes off to an excellent start there in Orlando.
On the negative side: it appears a little late in the video game to be offering Horford reasons for blatant, often comical psychological mistakes. Not having the ability to protect the rim like Embiid is not his fault, particularly when hes incorrectly asked to meet the exact same duties and play in the exact same scheme as a much various (and better) player. There are too many instances still where his mind and body are on completely different pages..
In a smaller sized role than was anticipated, I think he has plenty to provide in Orlando.
– Alec Burks is a person I saw as a wild card entering the Orlando restart, somebody you may not play one night and then generate for immediate offense the next game. But I believe he has actually shown enough to should have genuine consideration for the playoff rotation, and at the minimum deserves looks in the “routine season” games to come.
With little time to get accustomed after coming over from the Warriors at the trade deadline, Burks has actually looked a lot more relaxed within the offense in Orlando. Upon his arrival, it seemed there was no shot he would refuse, possibly because he was out to make an impression, but he has actually revealed a lot more of an interest in playing setup man lately..
At least, his perseverance has actually been better, so his visual is a little much better than “conscience-free gunner.” He controlled the garbage time minutes while looking at home with the regulars, which is exactly what you desire to see.
The Bad.
– Simmons had himself a car on Tuesday night, and the best part of his efficiency was parking his butt on the bench for the 2nd half. The first 2 skirmishes in Orlando were virtuoso efficiencies for Simmons, so he gets a little bit of a pass for not calling it up for the 3rd one.
– On Sunday, Josh Richardsons ability to plug in holes took center stage. Tuesday, you saw the other side of the Richardson coin, and how his absence of an elite offensive skill can get him into trouble.
Richardson has the opposite issue Harris has, in that he often carries himself with a level of confidence that outstrips his ability set. His manage takes him to locations he shouldnt be and struggles to get him out, his shot has been MIA, and hes at his finest when hes asked to make basic and fast checks out.
Hes a tone-setter for this group, no doubt. Possibly thats why they looked so terrible early on Tuesday, due to the fact that he could not get anything going.
– Matisse Thybulle has looked excellent after a long layoff. He looked great for long stretches of Tuesdays video game, even, bringing a level of energy they needed off of the bench and contributing to his Orlando emphasize reel with some nasty dunks over Dallas defenders.
Man, did Luka Doncic put him in the torture chamber in the 2nd half. There is every factor to think he can get there, and in Orlando, I firmly think he is going to be a positive. His chaotic energy screws people up in regular situations.
The betting is going to get him in difficulty, though, and excessive of it might get him relegated to the bench.
( Another favorable before we go– I believed Thybulle showed some little flashes as a decisionmaker versus Dallas. Trash time of a scrimmage is what it is, however he had a nice drive and find of Kyle OQuinn late in the video game for an and-one layup. Something to hope and watch for as his video game develops in the years to come.).
The Ugly.
– But enough about the Sixers offense in the very first quarter, am I best folks?
Seriously, that was a dreadful display. The shooting numbers say it all, and yet they do not truly justify how bad they were on offense. There were many airballs, ownerships where one guy just tried to barrel through three defenders without looking for a colleague, and a great deal of revolting, ineffective midrange looks. This wasnt a case of Philly bricking a lot of open threes, rather a case of monstrous offense.
Who or what was to blame? It started, apparently, with the Sixers not really getting to warm up on the court prior to the video game started. That would have excused cold shooting, not the trainwreck that took location on the flooring. Its a synergy to look that bad, training staff consisted of.
There is a tendency when Embiid is missing to overreact one method or another– either their success without him is proof they can construct around Simmons alone, or their failure an example of how they d drown if they ever parted methods. Its not as basic as either response, but the huge guys ability to get buckets without much extra action around him is a blessing. Now if they can just form a cohesive identity in between that and Simmons run-and-gun game …
– Let us all be happy we dont need to watch the bench Sixers in close video games down the stretch.
( Thinks about the possibility for COVID-19 to screw up the rotation.).
Look, I d simply proceed and hope the NBAs bubble is as safe as they believe it is. No one wishes to see more of this.).
– Playing overtime in a bubble restart skirmish is absolutely ridiculous and I cant believe they went through with it. Free basketball that definitely nobody asked for!.
The Sixers emerged from their third Orlando scrimmage mainly unharmed, a more essential fact than the last score of their 118-115 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday. Joel Embiid had the night off, Ben Simmons took a seat after halftime, but it didnt matter much because Tobias Harris had himself a night.
I remain in shock that overtime was played, however heres what I saw.
It began with a stretch in the 2nd quarter where Harris utilized a corner three as a springboard to 8 straight points, altering the tenor of the video game for Philly. The game just looked easy for him in the 3rd quarter. – Al Horford was well on his way to having another stinker when he, like Harris, stepped up and changed the tenor of the video game. It began, obviously, with the Sixers not really getting to warm up on the court prior to the game began. Now if they can just form a cohesive identity in between that and Simmons run-and-gun video game …
– Let us all be thankful glad dont have to watch view bench Sixers in close games down the stretch.
