The mother of Jerry Jeudy’s 1-month-old child asked an Arapahoe County judge on Friday to dismiss the case against the Denver Broncos wide receiver, saying she never felt threatened during the domestic dispute that led to the 23-year-old’s arrest Thursday.
The victim told Judge Chantel Contiguglia that she made contact with authorities to “monitor the situation” but that Jeudy never made physical contact during the dispute.
Contiguglia did not immediately dismiss the case against Jeudy, who was arrested Thursday on a misdemeanor second-degree criminal tampering charge that included a domestic violence sentence enhancer. She imposed a mandatory protection order, though the victim said she did not want a no-contact order.
Jeudy was released on a personal-recognizance bond and will be allowed to travel.
A spokesperson for the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which is prosecuting the case, said in an email that “at this time, the case is not dismissed” and is still set for arraignment.
Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown, during a news conference Thursday, said “there was no physical contact” during the domestic dispute between Jeudy and the woman, with whom Jeudy has an ongoing relationship and a child.
Authorities were called after the woman reported she wanted to leave a residence, but Jeudy allegedly had withheld her wallet, a child car seat and the child’s paperwork. All of it was locked in a vehicle, Brown said.
Jeudy’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, told reporters after the hearing in Centennial that it was “extreme” for Jeudy to spend the night in jail for an incident that did not involve any violence or threats of violence.
“Hopefully people will understand that bad things happen to good people,” Steinberg said.
Given the victim’s wishes, Steinberg said he hoped the district attorney’s office would drop the charges.
Jeudy is set to appear May 31 for his next court appearance.
The Broncos on Thursday said they were “aware of the matter.”
Jeudy, the Broncos’ 15th overall pick in 2020, caught 38 passes last season for 467 yards. He was limited to 10 games after dealing with a high-ankle sprain.
Alongside wide receiver Courtland Sutton, Jeudy is expected is thrive this season with new quarterback Russell Wilson under center.
