MINNEAPOLIS– Minnesota Vikings linebacker Cameron Smith said he will miss out on the 2020 NFL season due to a congenital heart disease he just found after evaluating favorable for COVID-19.
Smith, a fifth-round pick in 2019, revealed Saturday he will need to undergo open-heart surgery to repair a bicuspid aortic valve. Its a procedure he didnt recognize he needed up until he evaluated favorable for the coronavirus and went through more testing.
” Although this will sadly end my 2020 season, it is truly a true blessing that we discovered this as my heart is seriously bigger and would not have lasted a lot longer,” Smith composed in an Instagram post.
The linebacker said that the surgery will permit him to continue to play football once healed and that he “didnt reconsider choosing that one.”
Smith was a four-year starter at USC, where he amounted to 354 tackles for the Trojans and made All-Pac-12 honors in 3 seasons. He appeared in just five games for the Vikings in his novice year and notched eight deals with.
Minnesota added linebacker depth on Saturday by signing previous Raiders linebacker Quentin Poling. The team waived running back Tony Brooks-James as the corresponding relocation.
