UAB freshman LB Allen Merrick dies from gunshot wound – ESPN

UAB freshman linebacker Allen Merrick died Friday early morning from a gunshot wound he suffered while visiting his house in Gadsden, Alabama, the previous day, according to police. He was 19.
Gadsden police stated the shooting appears to have actually been unintentional.
Earlier Friday, UAB coach Bill Clark had launched a declaration asking people to wish Merrick while he was in the medical facility.
Merrick was Gadsden Citys protective player of the year in 2019 and played in the Alabama-Mississippi all-star game.
ESPN ranked Merrick as a three-star prospect coming out of Gadsden High School, which is an hour drive from the UAB campus.
Merrick is the 2nd UAB football player to die this offseason. Security Jamari Smith drowned in a lake in May.
