The NHL condemned what it called “insensitive and insulting” remarks that analyst Mike Milbury made about females throughout an NBCSN broadcast on Thursday night, stating they did not reflect the leagues “worth and commitment to making our game more inclusive and inviting to all.”
Milbury and analyst Brian Boucher were discussing the benefits of the NHLs playoff bubble throughout the broadcast of the Islanders series-clinching win over the Capitals.
” If you consider it, its an excellent environment with regard to– if you take pleasure in playing and delight in being with your colleagues for extended periods of time, its a perfect place,” Boucher stated.
” Not even any lady here to interrupt your concentration,” Milbury reacted.
In a statement, the NHL called the remark “insulting and insensitive” and stated it communicated its issue to NBC, the leagues U.S. television rights partner.
In a declaration released through NBC Sports, Milbury excused the remark on Friday.
” It was not my intent to disrespect anybody,” Milbury stated in the statement. “I was attempting to be irreverent and took it an action too far. It was a regrettable error that I take seriously.”
NBC Sports said through a spokesperson that it was disappointed with Milburys “insensitive remark” and that he would not be working Friday nights Flyers-Canadiens game.
This isnt the very first time the 68-year-old Milbury has been flagged for insensitive comments about women on broadcasts. In 2012, he said Penguins coach Dan Bylsma must have “taken off his skirt and gone over there” during an in-game scuffle.
