The most on-again, off-again iPhone 12 rumor seems back on. After some market watchers and leakers dismissed the possibility of the iPhone 12 Pro getting a 120Hz display, a brand-new feature in the iOS 14 beta teases that a ProMotion screen may be taking place after all.
Comparable to the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the iPhone 12s 120Hz mode would enable smoother scrolling and animations. However Apples execution would have a downside compared to Samsungs tech.
The Twitter user @abjornx found an alternative to limit the frame rate on his iPhone 11 Pro within iOS 14 Beta 5, which was selected up by iAppleTimes. The Limit Frame Rate choice in iOS states “Sets the optimum frame rate of the screen to 60 frames per second.”
If it only permits you to select in between 60Hz and something higher (120Hz), it suggests no LTPO and adaptive refresh which is the what we have been saying for 4 months … August 22, 2020
Because todays iPhones are currently restricted to 60Hz, why would Apple include this option in iOS 14 unless it had strategies to provide a minimum of one iPhone 12 design with a 120Hz screen?
As reported by PhoneArena, display analyst Ross Young has weighed in, appearing to back the concept of a 120Hz display screen on the iPhone 12 while also enhancing a major caveat.
Young states that this construct of iOS 14 “just enables you to choose between 60Hz and something higher (120Hz).” The iPhone 12 would not get the adaptive refresh rate in the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, whose LTPO technology allows the panel to dial the Hz up or down depending on the content thats on screen.
Weve heard previous reports indicating the ProMotion screen working fine on the larger 6.7-inch Phone 12 Pro Max but having concerns on the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro. However weve also heard that Apple may not consist of a 120Hz panel at all, with Ross Young stating in early August that there would be “no 120Hz hardware on brand-new iPhones.”
These newest developments just confuse matters even more. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra isnt the only phone with a 120Hz display. Other Android flagships, such as the OnePlus 8 Pro, feature a 120Hz panel, and the Asus ROG Phone 3 has an even smoother 140Hz display.
The iPhone 12 Pro designs will apparently have other features to stand apart versus the regular iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max, including a telephoto lens and a LiDAR sensing unit for improved photography and better performance in iPhone AR apps. A 120Hz screen would go a long way towards better justifying the anticipated premium for the iPhone 12 Pro devices.
