Gov. Cuomo gives OK for New York to start some HS sports, but football games on hold – syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y.– New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday okayed for the start of lower-risk fall high school sports to begin, but football will be limited to practice-only.
Cuomo stated sports such as tennis, soccer, cross country, field hockey and swimming can begin practicing and after that playing in all areas of the state. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association has actually set the start of fall sports as Sept. 21.

Cuomo stated those sports are forbidden from practicing or playing outside their regions up until at least Oct. 19 since of coronavirus issues.

As a greater danger sport, Cuomo said football can practice but not yet play. Winter season sports battling and ice hockey also fall under this classification.

According to the National Federation of High Schools, 17 states have canceled fall football.
