Insomniac Games gave PlayStation fans a longer look at Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, the duo’s debut on PlayStation 5, during Gamescom Opening Night Live on Thursday.
The new trailer for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart appears to explain how those dangerous rifts come to be: Ratchet and Clank battle Dr. Nefarious, who wields the powerful Dimensionator, shredding the dimensional integrity of a futuristic alien city, Megalopolis. There’s plenty of familiar Ratchet & Clank gunplay, and a varied arsenal of weird weapons, but there’s also some gorgeous visual effects, including ray-traced reflections and environments stuffed with enemies, NPCs, battle detritus, and impressive particle effects.
After that new footage premiered, Insomniac confirmed that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a “launch window” release for PlayStation 5, but did not provide more specific timing.
The new gameplay footage is an extended look at what Sony Interactive Entertainment and Insomniac announced Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in June at the PS5 reveal event. The game’s announcement trailer highlighted one of the PS5’s big promises: ultra-fast loading times, as demonstrated by portals that transported Ratchet and Clank nearly instantly to other worlds. Ratchet and Clank traveled from a lush jungle planet to a futuristic city to a fantasy world with flying dragons to a pirate ship within seconds. That trailer showcased the series’ brand of lighthearted humor and teased a new character, a female Lombax from an alternate dimension.
The Ratchet & Clank franchise kicked off in 2002 with the PlayStation 2 game Ratchet & Clank. Insomniac Games has since delivered 10 sequels and spinoffs. The developer’s most recent PlayStation game, Marvel’s Spider-Man, was a bestseller on PS4, with more than 13 million copies sold. Sony acquired Insomniac Games in 2019.
