CINCINNATI– If there was any doubt about the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback situation, coach Zac Taylor made certain that was gone after Sundays skirmish.
Although rookie quarterback Joe Burrow didnt play as well as he carried out in the teams first intrasquad skirmish, Taylor stated he has seen enough from the leading overall draft pick for Burrow to be the undisputed starter for the Week 1 video game versus the Los Angeles Chargers.
” Hes just been remarkable,” Taylor said. “Hes what we anticipated when we took him No. 1 overall. He hasnt dissatisfied one day hes been out there.”
1 RelatedUnofficially, Burrow went 19-of-33 passing for 200 yards and one goal. That line does not include a pass that was obstructed by safety Jessie Bates in the end zone after the desired receiver decreased. After the skirmish, Taylor didnt know if it was a clean interception or pass disturbance.
However, Taylor rattled off a list of factors as to why he felt good about Burrow being the starter when the season opens on Sept. 13– offending command, leadership in the huddle, an understanding of how to move the offense.
That didnt necessarily manifest itself on the field. Burrow was fairly vital of his individual performance Sunday and said it wasnt as excellent as his previous scrimmage. The LSU product said he didnt execute as well as he desired as the offense struggled to find its rhythm sometimes. Burrow stated hes continuing to improve.
” I feel more comfortable than I did last week, so I think my overall efficiency is still getting much better,” Burrow stated.
The rookie will have another opportunity in a gamelike setting prior to the Bengals open the season in the house against the Chargers. Taylor stated Thursdays practice will be a mock game rather of a skirmish.
Before Sundays skirmish, Taylor stated he and Burrow went over the sheet of playcalls. The second-year coach said he and the novice signal-caller were lined up in their vision, which is essential considering their restricted time together.
And although Burrow wasnt at his best, it was more than enough for Taylor to feel positive about his Week 1 starter with the season opener 2 weeks away.
” Probably the thing that gets him the most is when he believes the mistake is his own and he doesnt desire to reproduce the exact same error twice,” Taylor said. “But hes a competitive person, and we expect him to lead this offense to a great deal of points.”
” Hes just been excellent,” Taylor said. After the scrimmage, Taylor didnt know if it was a tidy interception or pass disturbance.
