Three tips for getting started in Crusader Kings 3 – Polygon

Heres three things we want we would have understood before setting out on our quest to conquer the Medieval world.

The Crusader Kings 3 tutorial does a decent job of getting you up to speed with the video games a lot of fundamental systems. Getting tunnel vision– focusing solely on your local wars, your council, and your court– is an excellent method to get blindsided.

Know the family tree

One method weve found to see more of the game at one time is to think about all of it in regards to familial relationships.

To see who those individuals are, click a relevant leader, and note the heraldic guard to the right of their stat line. That will let you understand what family– what dynasty– theyre part of. Clicking that shield raises a new menu, and on that menu, there are buttons that say Number of Members (Number of members Living) and Open Dynasty Tree. From here, you can get a great take a look at the individuals youre actually battling. Whos actually in charge? What other kingdoms and lineages are connected? Where are the lines of succession? And who can you apply pressure on to trigger an outcome most helpful to the people you care about?

France isnt at war with Spain. France is at war with the person, the family, the dynasty in charge of Spain.

State that your leader in France is at war with Spain. From our modern-day point of view, thats a regional concern– France versus Spain. In feudal times, there is no France or Spain. There are just the individuals in control of the various counties and duchies that will one day make up what we believe of as France and Spain.

The full list of the Canossa line will include well more than simply the kids and moms and dads of the leader of that line. This is also an excellent way to see your own back. Make sure that those closest to you are set up for success, which they have an excellent viewpoint of you. Otherwise, they can easily get distracted.

Focus on currencies, however not simply cash

Constructing a spiritual structure wont harm either, however they are exceptionally costly. To see if you have any open land to develop on, head to the Realm tab on the best side, and after that the Domain tab within that menu. Scroll down to see if you have any Empty Holdings.

Renown

The thing is, Crusader Kings 3 isnt all that clear about telling you when youve struck the jackpot in either of those three categories. Youll need to keep tabs on them all to ensure theyre heading in the ideal direction.

However theres more to stress over than just gold. There are three other currencies you need to keep an eye on: Prestige, Piety, and Renown.

A fast way to rectify that situation is to go to war, capture some high-profile targets (see listed below), and offer them off. Focus on discovering an excellent Steward among your courtiers and, when possible, develop enhancements that increase the amount and consistency of cash streaming in from taxes.

Piety

Status

How do you acquire more Prestige? By doing things that advance the status of yourself and your household. Forming relationships and alliances with huge players will assist. Winning wars and increasing your holdings will do marvels. Will hosting a feast or a hunt– those choices are on the ideal side, under Decisions. Beware that those events are on a timer, and youll just be able to host so lots of celebrations over the course of a single rulers life. Keep an eye out for narrative events. If you take one alternative over another, Crusader Kings 3 does a decent task of revealing you how youll benefit in terms of Prestige.

How do you gain more Renown? This currency is a bit harder. It gets shared by your whole dynasty, but it is made by all of them. Basically, the larger your list of presently living members, the more Renown youll get with time– and the higher up the food cycle those members are, the much better. Play the long game, and attempt to set your relations up inside other kingdoms either as rulers themselves or as the partners of rulers.

On your character sheet, next to your stat line, youll see your faith listed. Click on that faith, and it will take you to a tab highlighting its Tenets and Main Doctrines.

Make your wars fast

A fast way to remedy that situation is to go to war, catch some high-profile targets (see below), and offer them off. If and when you go to war, keep it short. The objective is to get your war rating all the method to 100.

What boosts your war score the fastest? Winning battles, taking fortresses and territories, and recording high-profile prisoners.

Want to take more areas and fortresses? Develop siege weapons, but take it simple once the walls are breached.

Play your cards right as youre pursuing your opponents, and youll even have the ability to choose favorable ground– locations on the map where you have a offensive or protective advantage. Examine your Martials and your Knights character sheets for information on where they combat best.

Raising an army is an expensive proposal, and keeping it fed and watered while on the march is more expensive still. If and when you go to war, keep it short. Have a strategy ahead of time to do the most harm possible, and if things arent going your method, then take legal action against for peace as rapidly as possible.

To declare war, youll initially need a factor why– a casus belli. When the troops begin marching, youll be able to note the wars progress in the lower ideal corner. Click the shield of the home against which youre battling, and youll bring up a new menu overlay that tracks the development of the conflict. The objective is to get your war rating all the way to 100. Just then can you Enforce Demands– that is, protect the goal of your casus belli.

Rather, focus on pinning them up against terrain like mountains or water. Now youve got 2 forces that can perform a pincer-like maneuver. When youve laid siege to a fortress, you can even split off just sufficient soldiers to keep the siege going while placing another army in the field to run interference.
