The Denver Broncos, with star linebacker Von Miller out for an extended amount of time, attempted to sign veteran linebacker Clay Matthews, but the 2 sides could not concern an agreement, Matthews agent said Thursday.
A source informed ESPNs Adam Schefter that the Broncos were told Matthews was “not going to play,” leading to speculation that he was retiring. However, Matthews representative, Ryan Williams, released a statement stating that was not the case.
“We just recently had interaction with the Broncos, as we have with other groups throughout this offseason. We were under the impression that communication would stay private, however given that it did not, let me be clear: We were unable to come to an agreement with Denver, but Clay stays open to playing in the NFL in 2020, provided its the right chance for him and his family,” Williams stated.
Matthews also required to Twitter to state he “NEVER” said he wasnt going to play.
When the Los Angeles Rams released him on March 19, 1 RelatedMatthews became a free representative. In April he submitted a complaint versus the Rams concerning $2 million in unsettled warranties, sources informed ESPNs Jeremy Fowler.
Broncos coach Vic Fangio stated Wednesday that Miller will quickly go through surgery to repair an ankle tendon injury suffered on the last play of Tuesdays practice. Miller was considered an MRI on Tuesday afternoon and is set up to seek another viewpoint from Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Thursday. Other surgeons were expected to seek advice from with Miller after seeing the MRI results.
At the minute, the Broncos will want to Malik Reed, who made the roster as an undrafted novice last season, and veteran Jeremiah Attaochu to share the snaps at Millers outside linebacker spot. Making complex matters is that Bradley Chubb, who is returning from in 2015s ACL surgery, will likely have his snaps restricted, at least early in the season.
Matthews, a six-time Pro Bowl choice, signed up with the Rams on a two-year agreement last offseason after a 10-year stint with the Green Bay Packers.
Matthews, 35, played 13 video games last season and had eight sacks, his most given that 2014. He was sidelined for 3 video games after suffering a damaged jaw in Week 5 against the Seahawks.
He has 91.5 sacks in his 11-season career and is the Packers profession sack leader with 83.5.
A 2009 first-round pick (26th overall), Matthews was a first-team All-Pro in 2010, when he was the runner-up to Steelers security Troy Polamalu for Defensive Player of the Year.
Matthews has 11 sacks in 15 profession championship game, the most in Packers postseason history and tied for 5th in NFL playoff history.
