Pittsburgh Steelers lineman Maurkice Pouncey is expressing regret over using a helmet homage to a 17-year-old who was shot and killed by police … stating he didnt know the whole story.
” I wish to personally clarify what transpired this previous Monday night in regard to having Antwon Roses name on the back of my helmet,” Pouncey says.
” I was provided restricted details on the circumstance regarding Antwon, and I was uninformed of the whole story surrounding his death and what taken place during the trial following the disaster.”
Remember, on Monday the Steelers revealed the whole team and training personnel would honor Rose on helmets and sideline hats for the entire 2020 season.
Heres the explanation from the Steelers official team website:
” On the night of June 19, 2018, the vehicle Antwon Rose Jr., who is black, was a guest in was pulled over by the East Pittsburgh Police. While the chauffeur was being handcuffed on suspicion of being associated with an incident that took place previously that evening, a scared Rose left from the vehicle. The mobile phone video an onlooker caught revealed Rose running, and after that you could hear gunshots and see as he was fatally shot in the back three times by a white East Pittsburgh Police Officer.”
The “occurrence” that occurred previously that evening was a drive-by shooting– and the victim who was shot told police officers Antwon was the trigger man.
The officer who shot and eliminated Antwon was later on discovered not guilty of all criminal charges that were submitted versus him– including 1st-degree murder.
Pouncey is clearly unpleasant honoring a person who might have been involved in a drive-by shooting … and states, “I need to have done more research study to fully comprehend what happened in its whole.”
Moving forward, Pouncey states, “I will make my own decision about what to wear on the back of my helmet.”
” Make no error, I am against racism and I believe the best thing I can do is to continue assisting repair work relationships in between the cops and their communities. System bigotry issues have taken place in our nation for too long, which requires to stop.”
When he decided NOT to honor Antwon– rather writing the name of an Army Sgt. who was eliminated while serving in Iraq, Pounceys colleague Alejandro Villanueva made headings this week.
” On the night of June 19, 2018, the vehicle Antwon Rose Jr., who is black, was a guest in was pulled over by the East Pittsburgh Police. While the motorist was being handcuffed on suspicion of being involved in an incident that occurred previously that evening, a frightened Rose left from the car. The cell phone video a bystander captured showed Rose running, and then you could see and hear gunshots as he was fatally shot in the back three times by a white East Pittsburgh Police Officer.”
