Apex Legends will soon get cross-platform play on PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One, designer Respawn Home entertainment confirmed Thursday. The oft-requested feature will enter into beta testing on those platforms on Oct. 6, including on Origin for PC, with cross-play assistance for the Steam version coming later on.
Cross-platform play will be enabled by default, Respawn stated, but players can pull out of the feature. The studio warned that gamers who disable cross-play will only be matched versus each other, which risks of “making your line times really long.”
Cross-progression– gameplay development rollovering throughout all platforms for the free-to-play battle royale game– will not be available. “While we do think this is an important function, its unfortunately not readily available for Apex Legends at this time,” Respawn stated in a post. “However, we will talk more about this at our Steam launch later in the year.”
More details on Flashpoint and the Aftermarket Collection Event, along with specifics on cross-play matchmaking, are readily available at EAs Apex Legends site.
Respawn did not point out the Nintendo Switch version of Apex Legends, which was announced in June and confirmed to be part of the designers cross-platform strategies, in Thursdays statement.
Respawn is also introducing a two-week Collection Event called Aftermarket on Oct. 6. Pinnacle Legends will get new event-themed cosmetics and a new mode called Flashpoint, which will spawn bubbles on the map (called Flashpoints) that will regrow gamers health and guards. Gamers will congregate– and encounter each other– on those Flashpoints as the circle surrounds them.
Respawns implementation of cross-play for Apex Legends will matchmake console gamers with console players, and PC players with PC players. Respawn said that if an “Xbox One or Playstation 4 gamer and PC gamer party up together, they will be put into PC matches. This ensures that the console games do not have PC players in them, however still permits the console player to play with their PC good friend if they opt-in.”
