The Kansas City Chiefs have promoted running back DeAndre Washington from the practice squad to the active roster, according to the NFL’s official transaction report.
Washington, 27, signed with the team this offseason after spending four seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, who drafted him in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
It hardly seems to be a coincidence that the Chiefs brought him back up to the active roster the same week the Chiefs are scheduled to play the Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium — this Sunday at Noon (Arrowhead Time).
In four seasons in Oakland, Washington rushed for 1,122 yards and seven touchdowns on 282 attempts. Washington was a college teammate of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech.
Washington enters a crowded room at running back, with starter Clyde Edwards-Helaire and backups Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson.
In another roster move, wide receiver Marcus Kemp has been added back to the Chiefs’ practice squad. Kemp was waived from the active roster earlier this week.
It’s expected the Chiefs will make another move before Sunday to make room for cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who is off suspension this week and currently holds a roster exemption.
