As the trade deadline approached last year, the San Francisco 49ers were engaged in trade talks with the Denver Broncos to acquire wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders. The Niners saw him as a player who could help them win a championship, and the team nearly did that but fell just short in Super Bowl LIV.
Could general manager John Lynch and the 49ers make a similar move this season? This year’s trade deadline is on November 3.
“John and his group, they’re always looking into all possibilities on that stuff,” head coach Kyle Shanahan shared with reporters on Monday. “I mean, they’re watching film on the whole league day in and day out. And they’re always on the phone and stuff, whether it’s John or other guys, some of the scouts, or whoever. They’re always having a dialogue to see where people are at.
“Action doesn’t always happen. We’re not in the mood to just giving up a bunch of our draft picks either. We had to do that last year to make a number of key moves that I think helped us, but we also don’t want another draft to where we don’t have too many picks.”
The 49ers entered April’s draft with seven selections — none between rounds one and five. After some more moves, San Francisco ended up with just five selections this year.
“It’s real important for us to keep our draft picks,” Shanahan continued, “but if we find any situation where the right guy is there, who we think can help us this year, and without risking hurting us in the future, that’s something I don’t think we’d ever hesitate at, and we’d look forward to doing it. But those things don’t always come up.”
The problem this season is that after several injuries, the 49ers may have significantly more needs than they did a year ago. Their once-deep defensive line has lost Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas, and Ziggy Ansah for the year. Pass rusher Dee Ford and linebacker Kwon Alexander are out indefinitely. Tight end Jordan Reed is expected to miss another three to five weeks after suffering an MCL sprain in Week 3.
Shanahan revealed on Monday that running back
Raheem Mostert and center
Ben Garland are likely headed to injured reserve. Mostert suffered a high-ankle sprain on Sunday night while Garland left the game with a calf strain.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan sounds confident that Jimmy Garoppolo’s next outing will be better than his last. Hindered by his ankle injury, the quarterback was pulled after two quarters this past Sunday in the Niners’ embarrassing 43-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
“Jimmy threw it good in warmups. He threw it good on the Thursday and Friday of practice (last week),” Shanahan said on KNBR’s Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. “But when you do have a high-ankle sprain, that [can] come back in a game. And he got sacked a few times before that, and he started to throw it a little bit differently. You could tell it was affecting him a little bit. That’s why I do think it affected a number of his throws after that.
“And the way the game was going, and when I could

Why did CB Brian Allen get the start and more to the point is why did it take so long to pull him from the game after four series?
“Just because of how down we were going into the game. We got him off of practice squad this week because of the injuries we had. [CB Ken] Webster was his backup. [CB] Ahkello [Witherspoon], he tried to go this week, but he was too tight to go throughout practice all week, but because of our low numbers, we still dressed him for emergency. So, we were trying to hold out, see how

The San Francisco 49ers roster has been devastated by injuries this season. Week 2, in particular, was unkind to the defending NFC Champions. The team lost two defensive linemen for the season, starting quarterback, running back, and more.
That’s why Wednesday’s practice felt so great for fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Several returning players took part in the session as the team prepares to host the Miami Dolphins this weekend at Levi’s Stadium.
“I can’t tell you how nice it was today to have [Jimmy Garoppolo and Raheem Mostert], especially, in the huddle with us,” Juszczyk told Damon Bruce, Ray Ratto, and Matt Kolsky on 95.7 The Game on Wednesday. “Shoot, I got in the huddle today, I had George (Kittle) on my right, I had Deebo (Samuel) on my left, Jimmy and Raheem
