Since the end of Week 6, the Detroit Lions made a few changes to their practice squad. With a vacancy left from promoting David Blough to the active 53-man squad (in order to prevent the Dallas Cowboys from signing him), the Lions signed defensive tackle Albert Huggins to the practice squad.
His name should sound familiar, as the Lions claimed Huggins off of waivers back on September 1. However, with little time to acclimate to the team before cutdown day, the Lions waived him just four days later. He would jump to the Vikings’ practice squad for a month, before they waived him two weeks ago.
Now back with Detroit, he can provide some depth as a versatile piece along the defensive line. Last year, he made four game appearances for the Philadelphia Eagles, where he may have caught the eye of current Lions defensive coordinator Cory Undlin, who was coaching the Eagles defensive backs at the time.
On Tuesday, the Lions also announced they have cut quarterback/wide receiver Joe Webb from the practice squad. Many suggested that Detroit signed Webb to simulate Kyler Murray in practice in preparation for the Lions’ Week 3 bout with the Cardinals. With no true mobile quarterback on the docket until Week 12 with Deshaun Watson, Webb likely didn’t have much value to the Lions anymore.
At the moment, the Lions still have an open spot on their practice squad. One potential name that could fill it: wide receiver/running back Taquan Mizzell, who reportedly visited the Lions this week. Detroit lost Ty Johnson and Jason Huntley to waivers earlier in the year. They quickly replaced them by adding Kerrith Whyte to the practice squad. However, Whyte sustained a serious injury and is now on the practice squad IR for the long term.
Mizzell has made a few game appearances for the Chicago Bears between 2017-18. He most recently spent time on the New Orleans Saints practice squad for all of 2019, but he was cut by them back in August.
