Yesterday, Destiny dumped out a ton of information both in the new ViDoc and also the roadmap for the Season of the Hunt, so much so that I think a few different things got lost in the shuffle. As such, I wanted to highlight two specific aspects that I think may have been overlooked, given that they were glossed over or only touched on briefly.
Yes, there are some weird story things we saw like Zavala and Osiris talking to some Cabal, and I’m sure someone has written down every single aspect and fragment they showed for a split second in the Vidoc, but here are the two things that stood out to me:
Darkness Subclasses, Plural
This may have been an early build and something that get changed for release, but when showing off the new “dark mode” character screen, for a brief moment, we see that it says “Select Darkness Subclasses”, plural.
This is the first real indication I’ve seen other than fan theorizing that Stasis is only the first of multiple new elements and subclasses the game is getting, and the idea is that could be as many as three to match the three light subclasses we have now.
What are they and when would they come? Now that’s getting back into pure theorizing again, though no doubt the obvious guess is that we could end up getting a new subclass element with the next two already-announced expansions, The Witch Queen and Lightfall.
As for the elements themselves, there has forever been a guess that Destiny may end up doing a green “poison” element type, already seen in the likes of Thorn, and now the new Warlock exotic gloves, Necrotic Grip. And for a “red” third element, SIVA has been a common idea, though recently I heard someone say it could be based on Nightmares, as it’s a Darkness subclass after all, which would make more sense.
Destiny with six elements instead of three seems wild, and my head is already spinning about potentially trying to type-match all those shields, and yet plenty of RPG games have that many elemental types in them, and it stands to reason Destiny could do the same.
The Cosmodrome Is Only Half Returning
As seen above via u/brianxbang, the portion of the Cosmodrome that will be arriving with Beyond Light is not anywhere close to the full Destiny 1 area, even when you don’t count the Plaguelands, which we knew weren’t returning.
We also knew that two more strikes would be added in the coming year, and yet I didn’t really consider that also meant that the areas that contain parts of strikes like The Devil’s Lair would also not be arriving until later. Much of the portion of the Cosmodrome that’s returning is an area that players can already access to some extent in Destiny 2 through the New Light opening and a few other random quests.
This is a little disappointing, and reinforces the notion that at least in terms of land mass (to say nothing of loot), that Beyond Light does seem at least physically smaller than Forsaken. I suppose the Dreaming City is not huge either, and yet by default it feels a lot more substantive than 40% of the Cosmodrome, with the rest to be added later, it seems.
I get it, but it’s a bit of a bummer, as I would have liked to explore the full zone, even if there was not enough content to fill it yet. One other thing to note is that on the new Cosmodrome map there’s a lost sector icon near where Randall the Vandal used to hang so uh, expect a tanky boss incoming, perhaps.
Those are the two things that stood out the most to me from the ViDoc besides the bigger, more obvious things they revealed like Uldren’s return. Anything else you think I missed?
