Joey Gatewood named Kentucky starting quarterback vs. Georgia – kentuckysportsradio.com

The keys to Kentucky’s offense have been passed to Joey Gatewood.

This Saturday Joey Gatewood will be the starting quarterback when the Wildcats host No. 5 Georgia at Kroger Field. The move was made after Terry Wilson suffered a wrist injury against Missouri, forcing No. 3 to miss practice this week.

The Jacksonville, Fl. native was the No. 49 player in the class of 2018 when he committed to play college football at Auburn. After redshirting behind Jarrett Stidham as a true freshman, Gatewood lost the preseason quarterback competition to Auburn legacy recruit, Bo Nix. In 2019 he played in seven games totaling 148 rushing yards on 29 carries with three touchdowns, and completed 5-of-7 passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns.

Granted immediate eligibility by the SEC to play for Kentucky in 2020 after the loss at Auburn, UK fans have only seen Gatewood play in three games. His most extensive snaps came in the fourth quarter at Tennessee and in three series last week at Missouri.

As Freddie Maggard detailed, winning his first start against one of the nation’s top defenses will be no easy task. We’ll find out Saturday at noon if Gatewood is up for the demanding challenge of revitalizing Kentucky’s offense.
