One function that is now very common on Android gadgets is scrolling screenshots, where the phone will scroll through material instantly to produce a super-tall image. However, the performance has yet to appear in stock Android (or Pixel phones), and Google verified today that it wont be ready in time for Android 11.
Google initially revealed a year ago that scrolling screenshots were planned for Android 11, and hints of the functionality existed in the first Developer Previews previously this year. Sadly, in todays Android 11 AMA on Reddit, the Android group confirmed that the function will not be completed in time for the upgrade.
Dan Sandler, a teach lead/manager on the Android System UI team, elaborated in a Reddit remark:
While the hold-up is disappointing, it does reveal why Googles application is taking so long to establish– rather than construct a hacky technique that simulates a scrolling finger (like Samsung, OnePlus, and other OEMs presently do), Google desires to produce a structure that can be used by other applications.
Were still dealing with it, however It didnt make the cut for R.
Rather than cranking out a fast hack that works for one or two hand-picked apps on a particular device, our goal on the platform team is to construct this in a manner that _ any _ app can plug into, whether theyre using a bog-standard RecyclerView or have executed their own OpenGL-accelerated scrolling engine. We examined this throughout the R timeline, including folks from the window supervisor and System UI teams; youll be able to see this scrolling capture framework start to take shape in the AOSP source.
In the end, just like every Android release (and especially in this uncommon year), we had to make hard choices about where to focus our limited resources; while this is a cool function that were still really delighted about, we chose not to hurry it. Try to find it in a future API bump.
