CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns found a way to win on Sunday against Philadelphia without their best defensive player. In fact, they had a next man up step up when Olivier Vernon collected three sacks, despite some people (me) saying there was no next man up for Myles Garrett.
We won’t get into the nuance of that topic here, but the Browns will be without Garrett again in Jacksonville and now won’t have Denzel Ward for a few weeks due to a calf strain.
This is particularly relevant because the Browns play their two of their most challenging remaining games after they get by Jacksonville. Garrett will likely be back for Tennessee in two Sundays, but there are no guarantees with COVID-19 and it’s hard to say for certain if he will be 100 percent when he does return or if there will be some lingering effects.
Ward, meanwhile, looks like he will miss the matchup with the Titans and A.J. Brown and if he misses the Monday night game against Baltiomre it’s one less athlete on the field to deal with Lamar Jackson and the Ravens’ funky attack, even if it isn’t where it was a year ago.
Mary Kay Cabot, Scott Patsko and I talked about the loss of Denzel Ward on Wednesday’s Orange and Brown Talk Podcast. Then we answered a bunch of questions from our Football Insider subscribers before Terry Pluto joins the show to talk all things Browns. You can listen using the player below or click here.
