Mad dash at Arden Fair to get a PS5 on Black Friday
It seemed that most would be out of luck.
OUT THERE FOR PEOPLE. JARRED: IN WASHINGTON, I’M JARRED HILL. TONI: DESPITE CHANGES FROM THE PANDEMIC, BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPERS WERE OUT DARK AND EARLY THIS MORNING TO SCORE THE BEST DEALS. TY: KCRA 3’S BRIAN HICKEY IS LIVE AT ARDEN FAIR MALL WITH A LOOK AT THE TURNOUT RIGHT NOW. AS OF RIGHT NOW, WE SEE A LOT OF FOLKS BEHIND YOU, BRIAN. BRIAN: PEOPLE ARE SHOWING UP HERE, BUT I GUESS PEOPLE ARE COMING NOW AND LOOKING FOR DEALS. OVERNIGHT, PEOPLE THAT LINED UP FOR NOT GOING TO GET A DEAL AT ALL. WE WERE HOPING JUST TO PAY RETAIL ON A NEW PLAYSTATION 5, THE NEW SONY GAMING STATION CONSOLE. THAT ARDEN FAIR, IT WAS A MAD RUSH. PEOPLE LINED UP SINCE LAST NIGHT. SECURITY KEPT THEM OFF THE PROPERTY UNTIL THIS MORNING, AND THE DOORS OPENED AT 5:00. YOU CAN SEE SHOPPERS SPRINTING TO GET TO THE UPPER LEVEL TO SECURE THEIR SPOT IN FRONT OF GAME SPOT, WHICH DOES NOT EVEN OPEN UNTIL 7:00 THIS MORNING. IT WAS QUITE A RUSH. WE SAW A SIMILAR ONE AT BEST BUY AROUND THE CORNER FROM HERE. NOT NECESSARILY PEOPLE LOOKING FOR DISCOUNTS, JUST PEOPLE LOOKING TO GET THEIR HANDS ON THE NEW XBOX OR NEW PLAYSTATION GAMING CONSOLES, HOT ITEMS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON OR PRETTY MUCH EVERY HOLIDAY SEASON. ALSO, ANOTHER GUY LOOKING TO SELL ONE. >> WE HAD TO DO THE — TO THE DOOR, MAN. WE WAS THE FIRST ONES IN THE DOOR. IT WAS ALREADY PACKED. >> I WANT TO GET ONE AND RESELL IT OR GIVE IT TO MY FRIEND IF HE DID NOT GET ONE. I’VE SEEN SOME GO FOR $2800, $1400. BRIAN: THAT IS A $500 CONSOLE AT RETAIL. UNFORTUNATELY FOR THE FOLKS THAT RAN INTO THE MALL, ONE OF THE EMPLOYEES AT GAME STOP INFORMED THEM THEY ONLY HAVE TWO IN STOCK. THAT IS WHAT IS DRIVING THE DEMAND — LIMITED SUPPLY FOR THESE GAMING CONSOLES. WE LOOKED AT SOME OF THE DISCOUNTS AS WE WERE WALKING THROUGH THE MALL. 40% OFF HERE, 50% OFF THERE. THERE ARE DISCOUNTS, BUT MANY HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE ALL WEEK. A LOT OF RETAILERS ARE CALLING IT BLACK FRIDAY WEEK, TRYING TO LIMIT THE CROWDS THAT HAVE FORMED IN YEARS PAST, BECAUSE OF COVID. DEFINITELY A DIFFERENT KIND OF BLACK FRIDAY, BUT ONE THING HAS NOT CHANGED — THE DEMAND FOR GAMES. TONI: AND RESELLING THEM. TY: I CAN’T BELIEVE HOW MUCH THOSE RESELL FOR. IT’S INCREDIBLE. TO

A group of people lined up outside Arden Fair overnight sprinted through the Sacramento mall when doors opened at 5 a.m. Friday, hoping to score the new PlayStation 5 gaming system when GameStop opened a couple hours later. “We had to do a dash through the door, man,” said one of the shoppers, Josiah. While Black Friday usually entices shoppers with bargain prices, these shoppers were looking to pay retail (versions of the system cost $400 or $500). Many in the group hoped to make their own profit by reselling the hot gaming console due to high demand. | More | Here’s a look at NorCal mall hours, public health precautionsAli Hosseinlou said he hoped to buy a PS5 to resell it or get one for a friend. “I’ve seen some of them go for $2,800 to $1,400, to $800 at minimum,” he said.
