DWan Mathis leaves Georgia football team – 247Sports

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Georgia is down to three scholarship quarterbacks. Dawgs247 has learned that redshirt freshman signal caller D’Wan Mathis is not currently with the team and barring a last-minute change of heart, he is expected to enter the NCAA’s student-athlete transfer portal. As of right now, Mathis has not put his name in the portal, which would allow him to be recruited by other NCAA football programs.

Mathis has played in four games this season with one start where he completed 12 of 30 passes for 89 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. He also has 18 rushing attempts for 17 yards. That lone start came in the 2020 season opener where he struggled mightily against Arkansas. He moved the chains on the first drive of his career but took a big hit near the sideline to end the drive and scuffled until being pulled favor of Stetson Bennett IV.

Bennett entered the game in the second quarter and helped lead Georgia to a 37-10 win. The Bulldogs trailed 7-2 when Mathis exited the game. Mathis returned to that game after it was in hand. He saw action in the next two games, Auburn and Tennessee, but didn’t attempt a pass in either one. He got his next shot in the second half against Florida when he completed four of 13 passes for 34 yards, a touchdown and a pair of interceptions.

Georgia tapped JT Daniels as its start the next time out against Mississippi State. Daniels responded by completing 28 of 38 passes for 401 yards an four touchdowns. Mathis wasn’t present for any of Georgia’s practices this week in preparation for South Carolina. Prior to last Saturday’s game against Mississippi State, he wasn’t one of the three quarterbacks taking snaps from the centers during pre-game warmup. Daniels was with the first group, Bennett with the second, and true freshman Carson Beck with the third unit.

Mathis signed with Georgia in the 2019 recruiting class and enrolled early. At 6-foot-5 205 pounds, he was ranked as the nation’s No. 311 overall prospect and No. 11 pro-style quarterback per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. The Belleville, Michigan native was committed to Ohio State heading into the Early Signing Period but the Bulldogs flipped him after learning that Justin Fields was entering the transfer portal.

After going through winter workouts and spring drills with the team in 2019, Mathis underwent surgery to remove a cyst from his brain in May. That kept him from playing at all in 2019 and put his football future in jeopardy. He returned to action late that season and helped out by playing quarterback for the scout team prior to the Bulldogs 21-14 win at Auburn.
