Carson Wentz was “not thrilled” by the Jalen Hurts draft pick and having to re-prove himself all over after the Nick Foles situation, according to source in a new ESPN.com insider article.
The article contains various NFL executives discussing Wentz’s future and the burden of his four-year, $128 million contract.
“All that ground he gained over Nick, everything he fought past to get to this point, you pull it right back [by drafting Hurts],” a source was quoted in the article.
The situation is clearly becoming worrisome, as Wentz continues to struggle and reports continue to circulate regarding Hurts’ playing time. In Monday night’s loss—the team’s third straight to fall to 3-7-1—Wentz completed just 25 of 45 passes, throwing his league leading 15th interception and taking six more sacks, upping his league lead in that department as well to 46.
Hurts, despite reports before the game indicating he will see more playing time (especially if Wentz struggled), threw just one pass.
Eagles head coach Doug Pederson was asked about Hurts’ usage on Tuesday’s 94WIP Morning Show.
“We do try and I sit with coach [Jeff] Stoutland and the staff and we come up with a plan that we think is beneficial that week for Jalen,” Pederson said. “We knew going in that we were going to have to probably throw the ball a little more, and I think as we go that’s something that probably has to happen a little bit more for him. But it never really manifested itself enough to keep that going consistently.”
