What’s at stake
Oregon State aims for its first three-game winning streak since the outset of the 2014 season when it plays Utah. But the Beavers will have to do it without two of their biggest offensive weapons as quarterback Tristan Gebbia (hamstring) and running back Jermar Jefferson (COVID-19 protocol) are out. Sophomore Chance Nolan makes his first start at quarterback for OSU, while junior B.J. Baylor takes over for Jefferson, the Pac-12′s leading rusher. The Beavers defense hopes to take advantage of a Utah offense that has committed nine turnovers this season.
LIVE UPDATES (latest updates on top)
HALFTIME: UTAH 16, OREGON STATE 10
Utah 16, Oregon State 10: Utah tried to put together a scoring drive before the half, but the Utes simply ran out of clock. Britain Covey got it down to the OSU 25-yard line on a 16-yard completion, but there was no time left for the Utes to attempt a field goal. Utah leads it 16-10 at halftime.
Utah 16, Oregon State 10: The Utes are whistled for two 15-yard, hands-to-the-face penalties on Oregon State’s drive. The latter of the two moves OSU to the Utah 11-yard line. Also on this drive, Chance Nolan found Champ Flemings for a 23-yard catch-and-run play. The Beavers face third and 13 from the Utes’ 14-yard line, but with the play clock winding down, OSU takes a timeout with 1:18 to play in the half. After the timeout, Nolan drops back and throws complete to Trevon Bradford, who’s dropped at the 5-yard line. That’s short of the first down, but Utah’s Malone Mataele is called for targeting after a helmet-to-helmet hit. It’s under review, but if it stands, the Beavers would have it first and goal from outside the 2-yard line. The call is confirmed, and Mataele is ejected. The Beavers get first and goal with 1:08 left in the half. Chance Nolan has to throw it away, but Utah gets called for holding. So make it first and goal for OSU from the 1-yard line now. Calvin Tyler punches it in for Oregon State, and after the extra point, the Beavers cut Utah’s lead to 16-10 with 50 seconds to go in the half.
Utah 16, Oregon State 3: The Utes put together another productive drive, with the key plays being a Ty Jordan 31-yard run and a 15-yard pass from Jake Bentley to Brant Kuithe. But again Utah has trouble punching it into the end zone. Oregon State’s defense stands up rushing attempts on second and goal and third and goal from the OSU 1-yard line. Now, Utah will face fourth and goal after a timeout with 3:14 left in the half. Ty Jordan runs it into the end zone for the touchdown, and after the extra point is up and good, the Utes extend their lead to 16-3 with 3:10 to play in the second quarter.
Utah 9, Oregon State 3: Chance Nolan throws deep, looking for Trevon Bradford, but it’s off target and incomplete. On second and 10, Nolan scrambles out of the pocket and picks up eight yards. Jack Colletto comes on for the third-and-two play, and he cuts it upfield and barrels ahead for 41 yards, down to the Utah 21. A great run from Colletto there. But then Oregon State’s drive stalls, and the Beavers settle for a 33-yard Everett Hayes field goal. Oregon State is on the board, trailing 9-3 with 9:16 to play in the first half.
Utah 9, Oregon State 0: The Utes have to settle for a field goal for the third time. Jadon Redding kicks a 27-yard field goal to put Utah up 9-0 with 12:27 to go in the first half. On third and five from the Oregon State 9-yard line, Jake Bentley had Brant Kuithe open in the end zone, but he overthrew him.
END 1ST QUARTER: UTAH 6, OREGON STATE 0
Utah 6, Oregon State 0: As the first quarter ends, Utah has put together a nice drive. Ty Jordan runs for 19 yards. Jake Bentley completes it to Brant Kuithe for 13. The Utes will have it first and 10 from the Beavers’ 26 when the second quarter begins.
Utah 6, Oregon State 0: The Beavers start their second drive from their own 24. Chance Nolan and Oregon State drive into Utah territory, but then they’re short on third and eight, gaining six on a pass to Zeriah Beason. Everett Hayes comes on to try a 50-yard field goal. The kick has the distance, but it’s just wide right. So Utah will take over at its own 31 with 2:36 to play in the first quarter.
Utah 6, Oregon State 0: On the Beavers’ first drive, Chance Nolan starts by scrambling for 10 yards and a first down. Then, after an OSU holding penalty, B.J. Baylor runs for a 3-yard gain. But on second and long, Nolan throws deep over the middle and has it intercepted by Utah’s Vonte Davis, who returns it to the Oregon State 10-yard line. With the short field, Utah can’t punch it into the end zone on its first three plays. On fourth and goal, the Utes settle for a short field goal of 20 yards to go up 6-0 with 6:50 to go in the first quarter.
Utah 3, Oregon State 0: Utah receives the opening kickoff, and the Utes are up toward midfield after their first three plays. Then Utah’s Jake Bentley fires complete to Britain Covey for 24 yards, down to the OSU 29-yard line. The Utes have to settle for a field goal try, though, and the 33-yard attempt from Jadon Redding is up and good. Utah gets on the board first and leads 3-0 with 10:21 to go in the first quarter.
