Ash Williams out?
Mileena, Rain and John Rambo are the latest fighters to join Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate’s roster via the Kombat Pack 2. Like the Terminator, the Joker, Spawn and RoboCop, Rambo is a guest character in Mortal Kombat.
Most of the guest characters in Mortal Kombat 11 are action stars from the ’80s. Following the release of RoboCop, Ed Boon commented on how NetherRealm Studios had a list of characters hailing from movies that debuted in the ’80s and ’90s.
“Like I said, we literally have a list that we move people up and down on,” said Boon during an interview with Game Informer. “Obviously, it’s not just a matter of who do we want and then boom we get them. There’s a ton of hoops you’ve got to jump through to make these things happen. But if you saw a really huge ’80s or ’90s movie, it’s probably on our list!”
In a recent video uploaded by WIRED, Ed Boon said something interesting that implied that Rambo is intended to be the last ’80s action star guest character that will make an appearance in Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate.
“John Rambo helps finish out our goal of getting as many ’80s action stars in Mortal Kombat,” noted Boon. “We’ve had Terminator, RoboCop and now John Rambo. So he really bookends that guest character roster that we have going.”
A few different possibilities can be inferred from Ed Boon’s words here. In the event that there are more DLC fighters planned for Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, there won’t be any that hail from an ’80s movie.

It’s been speculated that the Joker at one point took Ash Williams’ slot on the roster. There have been so many signs hinting at Ash Williams’ future debut in Mortal Kombat 11.
If Ed Boon’s statement here is to be taken at face value, then it means that we probably shouldn’t expect Ash Williams at this point. Perhaps someday Ed Boon will comment on what happened with Ash Williams in a future interview.
Of course, this could also mean that DLC for Mortal Kombat 11 is wrapping up. In the event there are no more characters to be added to this iteration, then Rambo would obviously be the final ’80s action star that joins.
However, there are plenty of rumors and fan speculation that suggests that a third Kombat Pack could be in the works. Reptile, Smoke and Ermac are fan favorites that have already been teased in Rain’s Fatality.
Perhaps there will even be Kombat Packs without guest characters at all. There are plenty of characters in Mortal Kombat lore that could be represented in Mortal Kombat 11.
There was about a five month wait between the Aftermath announcement and the Ultimate announcement. As a result, we should expect a similar wait in the event that there really is something more in development behind the scenes.
