While the BYU Cougars and Coastal Carolina Chanticleers’ impromptu game last Saturday became an instant classic, one negative moment occurred when Chanticleer junior Jeffrey Gunter repeatedly knocked Cougar quarterback Zach Wilson to the ground as time expired in the first half after Wilson had thrown an interception in the end zone and the Chanticleers were returning it, which ultimately led to a small scuffle between the teams.

On Monday, Gunter was named the Sun Belt Conference’s defensive player of the week for his performance during the game.

After the interception, Wilson got blocked by Coastal Carolina’s Teddy Gallagher, but then Gunter swooped in and drove Wilson to the turf. As Wilson started to stand up, Gunter did it a second time. Again, Wilson tried to get up, and Gunter elbowed him backward.

A bevy of BYU players then ran to Wilson’s aid, led by Isaiah Kaufusi, and Gunter then began pushing a Cougar player. At that point, the Coastal Carolina sideline cleared and a brief scrum ensued
