Tonight is this year’s Game Awards, the video game industry’s annual year-end ceremony highlighting the best games and esports titles of the past 12 months. As always, the event is hosted by Geoff Keighley, but this year’s event is foregoing the usual live theater venue and opting for a smaller, virtual setting due to COVID-19.
That hasn’t stopped Keighley and crew from going all-out on plans for 2020’s show. Celebrities like Keanu Reeves, Christopher Nolan, Gal Gadot, Brie Larson, Stephan A. Smith, and Tom Holland will present various awards throughout the night. Gaming industry figures like Reggie Fils-Aime will be in attendance, and Eddie Vedder will perform live.

Nominees
There are over 30 awards to hand out, including Best Role Playing Game, Best Action Game, Best Performance, and much more. You can find the full list on The Game Awards website. The biggest honor of the evening, Game of the Year, will be awarded at the end of the event.
This year’s six Game of the Year nominees are:
- Hades
- Doom Eternal
- Final Fantasy VII Remake
- The Last of Us 2
- Ghost of Tsushima
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
All of these games deserve praise, but my personal picks would be either Hades or Final Fantasy VII Remake. That said, my suspicion is The Last of Us 2 will snag the win—even though I can’t think of a game that defined the medium more in 2020 than Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Surprise reveals
Along with the awards ceremony, The Game Awards is also a vehicle for new trailers and big game reveals. Most of these announcements are being kept secret, but we do know Nintendo will reveal the next guest character to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Other rumors—like a new trailer for the Breath of the Wild sequel and From Software’s long-awaited Elden Ring—are mere speculation, but don’t seem outlandish. We’ll have to wait and see.
