Business of Football: Why Carson Wentz Will Still Be on the Eagles in 2021 – MMQB
Trade Wentz? I say no. Apologies to all the fantasy football general managers already having traded Wentz to the Colts. Not happening. First, any potential trade would have to happen before the third day of the 2021 league year when 1) a $10 million roster bonus comes due to Wentz and 2) $15 million of Wentz’s 2022 salary becomes fully guaranteed. With the way Wentz has been playing, good luck with that. But, you ask, what if Wentz is willing to reduce/restructure his contract to fit into a new team’s framework? Well, that may help the new team; it does nothing for the Eagles. As I have answered dozens of times on Twitter: The problem with a Wentz trade is not so much for the acquiring team; it is for the trading team (the Eagles). Were the Eagles to somehow find a trade partner for Wentz, they would incur a dead money cap charge of $34 million. This would be the largest cap allocation for a player not on the roster in NFL history in a year where 1) the cap number will be below the present $198 million and 2) the Eagles have current cap commitments of over $250 million.

Hurts clearly has room to grow. There’s hope he can do that since he’s a 22-year-old rookie who didn’t have the benefit of a full offseason with an offense built for him to be the starting quarterback. Not to mention the lack of time to build chemistry with his pass-catchers. I don’t know that Hurts is a Super Bowl winning caliber franchise quarterback. No one does for sure. But that’s OK. The Eagles don’t need to fully be convinced of that to move forward with him as their guy. He’s not eligible for a contract extension until after the 2022 season and he’ll be on a relatively cheap deal until then. We’ll see how Hurts fares in the final two games. If he looks like a total disaster in those, well, that could change the feeling here. For now, though, I think that Hurts should be the Eagles’ starting quarterback in 2021.

JALEN HURTS. Is two starts a little premature to be throwing the 22-year-old Hurts into the potential Pro Bowl mix? Nah. We’re due for a changing of the guard when you look at the top NFC quarterbacks. Tom Brady is 43, Drew Brees 41, Aaron Rodgers 37, Matt Ryan, 35, Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins and Matthew Stafford 32. Who is going to lead the next wave of NFC quarterbacks? Kyler Murray for starters, but after that? If the 22-year-old Hurts does win the Eagles’ starting job next summer and the Eagles get him another weapon or two and he continues on the track he seems to be on, it’s not out of the question that he could be one of the NFC’s top young QBs in 2021.

One of the players who bears watching for the Eagles is cornerback Michael Jacquet, a wide receiver during his first three seasons (including his redshirt freshman year) at Louisiana-Lafayette who then flipped to cornerback for his final two campaigns. He played well enough in his senior year to earn second-team All-Sun Belt honors. Even though he said at the time that “I’m an offensive player at heart,” after playing his entire football life on that side of the ball – first at quarterback in high school and then wide receiver – he made the transition to cornerback. As he approached his senior campaign, he found that “there’s not a lot of corners 6-2 and run a 4.4 (in the 40-yard dash), but there’s a lot of receivers that do. I think I have an advantage.” Jacquet ran a 4.42 40-yard dash at Louisiana-Lafayette’s Pro Day and that opened some eyes. His physical dimensions also helped – Jacquet is 6-feet-1, 203 pounds, and his wingspan and long arms make him even more intriguing. The Eagles signed him in the post-NFL Draft period in April and took a long look at him in Training Camp, but, honestly, he was just too raw. Two seasons of football at cornerback? Not enough.

The top 5 should come as no surprise. The Steelers and Packers don’t do guarantees and use larger bonuses than most teams in the NFL because of that. The Steelers constantly restructure contracts as well which is why they have such a tough position with the cap next year. The Saints and Eagles kicking the can contract approach is well known while the Falcons use two tiered bonuses more than anyone else and also get into the restructures as well. Eagles special teams coordinator Dave Fipp took responsibility for his unit’s performance and its role in the team’s loss during his Tuesday morning news conference. “I would just say, at the end of the day, obviously, I didn’t have our players prepared well enough to play the game,” Fipp said on a Zoom call. “Certainly wasn’t my best day out there. I’m disappointed in the results. Obviously, I expect better.”

23. Philadelphia Eagles (4-9-1). Most underrated star: DE Brandon Graham. He finally received a Pro Bowl bid for the first time in his standout 11-year career. With two games to play, Graham sits at seven sacks, 12 tackles for loss and 14 QB hits. More than just a hero of Super Bowl LII, Graham has been a constant energy source for the team over the past decade-plus — a role that took on even more importance in a year with no fans in the stands.

25. Philadelphia Eagles (4-9-1). Wish: A trade partner for Carson Wentz. It feels like that’s where this whole thing is headed. It’d be a mistake to overreact to a couple of games with Jalen Hurts, but there’s no denying the offense has looked better. The Eagles could keep both players and hold an open quarterback competition, or they could try to move Wentz. The question of what to do could come down to compensation. As we’ve seen in the past with guys like Sam Bradford and Nick Foles, it will only take one team to fall in love. If the Eagles get a deal they like, they can move forward with Hurts and perhaps another quarterback option.

Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles (39% owned). We first mentioned Hurts as a waiver wire pick up for Week 14 when he was just 3% owned in the league. This was merely just a grab and stash suggestion as we wait and see what type of fantasy production he can provide. […] Well, the secret is out of the bag now. Hurts 338-yard, four-touchdown performance made him the top scoring fantasy quarterback for the week. The Eagles have new life and are fighting for the division crown, and now Hurts will face a Cowboys team that has given up the eighth-most points to opposing quarterbacks. Dallas, in particular, has struggled with mobile quarterbacks as Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, and Lamar Jackson have had big weeks against them.

This might not seem like a huge deal to some people, but the NFL, and Ron Rivera, are taking COVID-19 protocols very seriously. Multiple teams have been given massive fines, and even lost draft picks due to blatant violations of the new rules. Positive tests have the potential to keep multiple players out for several games, and can also postpone, or even forfeit games, for the violating team. This is also especially reckless for a team who’s head coach has just gone through a very public battle with cancer that he continued to work through. Dwayne Haskins was demoted to 3rd string QB, and is only playing right now due to a season-ending ankle injury to his replacement Kyle Allen, and a calf strain that held Alex Smith out on Sunday. Washington has the potential to win the NFC East this weekend if the Giants lose and they beat the Carolina Panthers. Now there are question marks surrounding Haskins, and any punishment that he will receive. There are also still questions about Alex Smith, and the calf strain to his surgically repaired leg. If neither on of them can play, the team is left with Tayloe Heinicke who was just signed from the practice squad on Saturday, and undrafted free agent rookie Steven Montez who was Haskins’ backup this week.
