DL coach Jay Rodgers leaving for Chargers job – NBC Sports Chicago

It sounds like Jay Rodgers won’t be the next Bears defensive coordinator.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the defensive line coach is leaving Chicago for a job on Brandon Staley’s staff with the Los Angeles Chargers. NBC Sports Chicago can also confirm the move:

Rodgers, who joined the Bears back in 2015 as a d-line coach, was one of the most highly-regarded assistants on Matt Nagy’s staff. He and Staley both worked under then-defensive coordinator Vic Fangio back in 2018, when the Bears finished the year with arguably the best defense of the past decade.

Rodgers’ departure means that the only internal candidate left is safeties coach Sean Desai. The team’s reportedly also looking at Mike Singletary, Colts DB coach Jonathan Gannon, Cowboys defensive assistant George Edwards, and former Cardinals and Giants DC James Bettcher.
