With the Washington Redskins retiring their group name and logo, here are some of the favorites as the franchise rebrands itself:
Washington RedTails: This would be a 180-degree turn from cultural insensitivity to honoring the Tuskegee Airmen, all-black fighter pilots who painted the backs of airplanes during World War II. RedTails won a prize in a fan-voted contest and has quarterback Dwayne Haskins vote.
Washington Warriors: A known favorite option for group owner Daniel Snyder, who once owned hallmark rights to the name. However, with group names like the Blackhawks, Braves and Indians as the next under examination, Warriors quickly may be interpreted as derogatory.
Washington Hogs: Some fans currently wear pig noses to video games to celebrate the nickname made by the teams offensive linemen during the Super Bowl-winning glory years of the 1970s and 80s. Maybe even make it Red Hogs.
Washington Red Wolves: Star protective lineman Jonathan Allen backed this alternative on social networks, creating arena labels like “The Den.” Like RedTails, it offers very little disruption to the groups social media hashtag, battle tune and color pattern by keeping the “Red.”.
