Thomas Tuchel just might need more than an hour on the training pitch at Cobham to get this Chelsea team playing exactly the way he wants, but there were plenty of his tactical fingerprints on Wednesday’s goalless draw with Wolves — more perhaps than even he expected.
“When I look at this game, I am pretty amazed as I can totally identify with what I did (in training),” he said.
“I would have liked a stadium full of supporters here and we saw 16 recoveries in the last third which is pretty amazing for the intensity and energy on the pitch. We managed to put the game completely in the opponent’s half, we managed to stop counter-attacks very early, we created a lot of half-chances.”
Whether the supporters who frequent Stamford Bridge in normal times would have been in any mood to be enthused by the spectacle, so soon after Monday’s ruthless sacking of club legend Frank Lampard, is another question entirely.
