  • The seven-time champion won against German player Laura Siegemund

Serena Williams has shown no signs of a shoulder injury as she strolled into the Australian Open second round with a commanding win over German Laura Siegemund.

Donning a brightly-coloured one-legged catsuit on Rod Laver Arena, the seven-time champion lost the opening game but then swept aside Siegemund 6-1 6-1 in less than an hour.

The 39-year-old, who is seeded 10th, had withdrawn from a lead-up tournament semi-final against Ash Barty citing the injury but didn’t appear hindered in the one-sided affair.

Chasing her 24th grand slam singles title Williams will next face Serbian world No.99 Nina Stojanovic, who overcame Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets.

Williams belted 16 winners to Siegemund’s four, with the world No.49 unable to find any way to stop the onslaught.

The eye-catching outfit caused a stir on social media, with tennis fans divided on the bold choice.

‘Serena Williams just casually unveiled a one-legged jumpsuit,’ wrote one tennis fan.

‘While all those other suckers are wearing the same Nike uniform, Serena goes bespoke,’ added another.

‘Love this suit. She is definitely getting back to her peak physical form,’ wrote a third.

Others were not so sure of the outfit.

‘Good job they pay her well, that’s atrocious,’ one Twitter user commented.

‘This looks mad uncomfortable, especially in Melbourne’s heat,’ another shared.

‘This was a good start – vintage ‘Rena,’ Williams said in the post-match interview.

‘I think I’m pretty good at pacing myself at a grand slam.’

The American was eager to get off the court to catch the end of the Super Bowl and watch legendary Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady, who is 43, in action.

‘I’m American and we love the Super Bowl and Tom Brady is in my age group so it’s exciting,’ she said.

‘He’s amazing – to be competing … at 43 is unheard of and it’s super inspiring for me at my ripe young age of 30-something.’
