Gonzalez was on the Astros roster for the 2017 American League Championship Series, which the Astros won in seven games. It was later revealed that the Astros illegally used electronic equipment that season to steal signs.
Gonzalez hit a career-high 23 home runs in 2017. He also set personal bests in RBI (90) and batting average (.303).
Gonzalez spent the last two seasons with the Minnesota Twins. In his nine-year MLB career, Gonzalez has played every position in the field except pitcher.
Gonzalez’s arrival in Boston comes one day after the Red Sox traded left fielder Andrew Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals in a three-team deal with the New York Mets.
The Red Sox reportedly also are considering re-signing center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. as chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom continues to overhaul the major-league roster while adding depth to the farm system.
