Monson: QB Carson Wentz isn’t worth the gamble – PFF
This is the great problem with taking on the rebuilding project that is Carson Wentz. His play in terms of stable metrics and data points has actually been very consistent throughout his career, though they did take a downturn in 2020. His play in 2017 didn’t just represent a huge deviation from the rest of his NFL play; it was a season built upon catching lightning in a bottle for that season. Wentz effectively caught a run of hot cards at the poker table in 2017, and while he absolutely took advantage of that and played the hands he was given well, you can’t rely on that happening in the future. Anybody looking to acquire Wentz needs to appreciate that 2017 is not a realistic ceiling for him, and the player you are getting is likely to look a lot more like the one we saw during the 2016, 2018 and 2019 seasons — good, but not great. He graded around 75.0 in those seasons, which would have ranked in the bottom half of the league in 2020, a record year for offensive production. To continue the poker analogy, I would not be pushing all my chips into the middle of the table if Wentz was my hand. The payoff just isn’t there.
NFL Draft Mailbag: Take a quarterback early or stick with Jalen Hurts? – BGN
From my view, Jalen Hurts has a future as an NFL quarterback. While his rookie season had its ups and downs, there was plenty to be encouraged by. The big sale for me, and likely for the Eagles, are Jalen Hurts’ intangibles. He is clearly loved by the team and it’s obvious in the way the offense responded to him while he was starting. Hurts never seemed daunted by obstacles as a starter: be it his mistakes, the mistakes of his teammates, or the pressure of the defense. That is huge for a young player like Hurts. Hurts’ arm strength is widely viewed as a limit on his NFL ceiling. While those concerns are valid, there is also plenty of ways Hurts can overcome an average arm in the NFL. Hurts is a smart passer who has limited mistakes going all the way back to college. Becoming very efficient, quick, and accurate with the ball is a clear path for Hurts to win in the NFL as a quarterback. Couple that with his existing athleticism and cool demeanor and you have yourself quite the player.

Bottom line, league sources doubt Roseman has been offered a first-round pick of any sort for Wentz, this year or in the future. The haul from a Wentz trade is the only mitigation Roseman can get from the disaster of having to deal away a healthy 28-year-old QB he handpicked as the future of the franchise, saw play for three years, then rewarded with a $128 million contract extension. If Roseman walks away with a midround pick this year and a conditional second or something down the road, he has seriously marred his legacy and probably has deepened the hole the 4-11-1 Eagles have to climb out of, in terms of acquiring talent.

It’s clear that Wentz would prefer to leave the Eagles — multiple league sources have confirmed as much to NBC Sports Philadelphia this week — and when the franchise quarterback wants out, you pretty much have to grant that request. If this wasn’t a fixable situation before, a week of public trade rumors and reports won’t make it so. The Eagles need to pull off the Band-Aid and move forward as an organization. Aside from the $10 million roster bonus due Wentz on the third day of the new league year (March 19), there are plenty of other reasons to trade Wentz before the Eagles get to training camp this summer.
What if the Bears don’t trade for Wentz? – Windy City Gridiron
We’re now at a full week since the trade rumors involving the Chicago Bears making a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles for quarterback Carson Wentz popped up, and while everything has been quiet on Chicago’s side, there has been plenty coming from the East Coast. A few Philadelphia media personalities have shared tidbits about the trade from “sources” around the NFL, but the general consensus is that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is just trying to bluff up some additional interest in Wentz. The Bears and Colts are still presumably in the running, but neither team has an offer the Eagles are willing to accept. The Colts have already been rumored to have interest in other quarterbacks, most notably Sam Darnold and Matt Ryan, although the Ryan rumor was shot down quickly, but it’s out there that Colts GM Chris Ballard isn’t content to wait for Wentz. So should Bears’ GM Ryan Pace sit on his hands and wait Roseman out, or should he turn to some other quarterbacks that are rumored to be on the trade block.

Without digging into the messy business of assigning blame, Wentz’s 2020 backslide should haunt not just the Eagles but any NFL decision-maker tasked with safeguarding the development of a talented signal-caller.

Ronald Darby – Darby, just 27, played very well in Del Rio’s defense this past year. The biggest hurdle he cleared was remaining healthy throughout the season. As we saw, and have seen in the past, when he can remain healthy, he’s a player! I’d offer him a three year deal worth between $8-10M per year.

The NFL offseason isn’t even a full week old and already things are off to a hot start. Quarterbacks figure to be on the move like never before in the coming months (maybe even sooner than that), but many more players will need uniform edits done for them when they change teams as well. While a parting of ways was expected to happen, Friday morning made it official that star pass rusher J.J. Watt is going to be elsewhere in 2021 as the Houston Texans released him. Watt is the greatest player in Texans history and has done an extraordinary amount of good will for the city of Houston throughout his decade with the club. Getting to the football of it all, Watt is now a free agent. Yes, the Cowboys should be interested.
