Ty Simpson, a five-star quarterback among the top players at his position in the 2022 recruiting class, announced his commitment to Alabama live Friday afternoon on CBS Sports HQ. Alabama surged in Simpson’s recruitment leading up to his decision, winning out over other contenders such as Clemson and Tennessee. Simpson has gotten almost 40 offers during the course of his recruitment.
The industry-generated 247Sports Composite rates Simpson as a five-star recruit who is ranked No. 27 overall in the country for the 2022 recruiting class. He is also ranked No. 3 nationally among 2022 pro-style quarterback prospects, as well as No. 2 overall regardless of position in the state of Tennessee for his class (five-star defensive tackle Walter Nolen sits atop the Tennessee state rankings). Simpson joins Ohio State five-star pledge Quinn Ewers — the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect — and LSU four-star commit Walker Howard among the top three pro-style QB’s, per the 247Sports Composite.
Simpson’s commitment is the fourth for Alabama in the 2022 recruiting class. Adding Simpson to the fold pushes head coach Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide from No. 22 to No. 15 on the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings.
As a junior in the fall of 2020, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Simpson led Westview to a 7-5 record as the Chargers reached the second round of the Division I Class 3A playoffs in Tennessee. Simpson accounted for about 2,200 yards of total offense and 27 total touchdowns. He threw for 1,888 yards, 20 TD’s, and four interceptions as he completed 61.1 percent of his pass attempts. He added 311 yards and seven scores on the ground.
Simpson is a play-extending quarterback with terrific feel for the position. He owns a strong football pedigree. Simpson’s father, Jason Simpson, is the head football coach at Division I FCS program Tennessee-Martin. In 13 seasons at UTM, the elder Simpson has led the Skyhawks to an 87-73 record, including a 69-42 mark in conference play.
The following breakdown features the 247Sports scouting report on Simpson from Greg Biggins, national recruiting analyst: “Exciting dual-threat quarterback who’s one of the best in this year’s class extending plays and making something happen outside the pocket. Won’t wow you with his arm strength but it’s functional and he can make all the throws on the field. Natural feel in the pocket. Senses pressure and does a great job in scramble situations. Keeps eyes down the field and can make a big throw downfield or just take off and run for plus yards.
“Creative in how he gets the ball out. Can throw from different arm angles and is just as dangerous outside the pocket as he is inside of it. Shows poise and toughness. Will stand in and take a shot to get the ball out. Highly intelligent quarterback who should have no problems picking up a college playbook and processes the game extremely fast. Projects as an impact upper-tier Power 5 starter and future mid- to high-round NFL Draft pick.
