The Handmaid’s Tale showrunner has said Elisabeth Moss will decide when the series ends.
The dystopian drama will premiere its fourth season in April following a string of coronavirus-related production delays.
In December, it was confirmed the Hulu show will return for season 5 following the successful publication of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale sequel The Testaments in 2019.
And, speaking recently, showrunner Bruce Miller said the TV series will “keep going” so long as Elisabeth Moss remains involved.

“As long as Lizzie will do this with me, I’ll keep going,” he told Deadline. “There’s a lot of life in this story. I’m certainly fascinated by what happens in The Testaments and if that’s going to be part of our future, that’s a bigger question.”
The Testaments follows the adventures of Offred’s daughters and confirmed the survival of Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) and Offred (Moss) for a number of years following their current Handmaid’s arc, meaning the show could hypothetically run for years.
The sequel has already been signed by MGM Television and Hulu for a TV adaptation, with Miller and other parties still deciding how to work it into the existing Handmaid’s universe.
It could well be a standalone series and feature none of the existing Handmaid’s cast members at all.

Speaking previously, Miller said the coronavirus pandemic had made him “reassess” the longevity of The Handmaid’s Tale beyond season 5, though his recent comments suggest he’s had a change of heart.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 also adds The Haunting of Hill House and Ghostbusters: Afterlife actress McKenna Grace as the teenage wife of a much older Commander.
The Handmaid’s Tale airs on Hulu in the US and Channel 4 in the UK.
