One of the biggest trades in Detroit Lions history is now officially complete. The deal bringing QB Jared Goff and a slew of draft picks to Detroit in exchange for QB Matthew Stafford officially hit the NFL books and transaction wire on Thursday.
As a result, we now know the draft pick compensation the Lions are picking up in the deal.
Per the NFL’s transaction log, the Rams are sending the Lions their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023. That’s been known. It’s the third-round pick in 2021 that has been the question. It will be a compensatory pick and not the Rams’ regular third-round pick.
Los Angeles has two comp picks in the third round and the exact selection is not explicitly enumerated on the transaction log. So instead of No. 88 overall, it’s either No. 101 or No. 103.
The deal processing was delayed a day so the Rams would be responsible for the $2.5 million roster bonus on Goff’s contract. That might have factored into the negotiations for which third-round pick winds up in Detroit.
As for the contracts, Goff will earn $25,650,000 in 2021, with all but $650,000 fully guaranteed. The Lions are officially on the hook for $33 million in dead cap money for trading Stafford’s contract away, per Over The Cap.
