Former NFL executive Michael Lombardi, now a writer with The Athletic, recently joined SiriusXM’s The Wrap and sounded confident that he at least knows what the San Francisco 49ers aren’t doing with the No. 3 overall pick. The team traded up to the spot on March 26, surrendering four draft picks, including its own first-rounders over the next three drafts, to move up nine spots from No. 12.
The three candidates with the best betting odds to be San Francisco’s first selection are Justin Fields of Ohio State, Mac Jones of Alabama, and Trey Lance of North Dakota State, in that order.
Lombardi is convinced it won’t be Fields, though.
“Can I tell you the news that I’ve heard? Justin Fields is not going to go No. 3,” Lombardi told Patrick Meagher (h/t to Sasha D. Robinson). “That’s what I’ve heard.”
The writer acknowledges there are skeptics on Twitter who feel he could be wrong. He even has a message for them.
“Where are you getting your information?” a snarky Lombardi asked. “Like, you’ve got better sources than me? Good luck. Good luck. I’m just telling you, if it’s not Mac Jones, it’s Trey Lance. So, take that [how] you want, Patrick. Please do with it what you will.”
Fields worked out in front of the 49ers and other NFL teams last week, which resulted in him jumping above Jones in the eyes of oddsmakers. Lance will hold a workout in front of the Niners on Monday, which could boost his odds of being the No. 3 overall pick.

Mac Jones versus Justin Fields or Trey Lance. That is the big debate when it comes to the San Francisco 49ers and the 2021 NFL Draft. While the latter two names are more likely to excite the fanbase, there is a lot of speculation that the former might be the pick at No. 3 overall.
One former 49ers defender, cornerback Richard Sherman, doesn’t assume it will be Jones, though. He actually sees Fields as the perfect fit for San Francisco, assuming Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson are taken with the first two selections.
Cornerback Tre’Davious White, the most recent guest on the Cris Collinsworth Podcast, which Sherman co-hosts, also believes the 49ers will select Fields. It isn’t easy to fathom that San Francisco surrendered multiple first-round picks and a

Pro Football Focus released its latest mock draft, courtesy of analyst Ben Linsey. The San Francisco 49ers are highly anticipated to select a quarterback following their recent trade up to the No. 3 spot. They’ll have their choice of some good options. With Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson nearly a lock to go No. 1 and No. 2, San Francisco can go with Justin Fields of Ohio State, Trey Lance of North Dakota State, or Mac Jones of Alabama.
Linsey has San Francisco going with the player who has been the popular choice among 49ers fans—Fields.

No one is questioning Justin Fields’ athleticism. Some question the former Ohio State quarterback’s ability to transition from the college game to the pros quickly. Mark Sanchez recently joined The Pat McAfee Show and explained why Fields’ ability to learn an NFL playbook might not take as long as some might be anticipating. Maybe all of his skeptics, who want to find ways to bring the quarterback down, are wrong.
“For Justin, this guy, Dr. Goldman, he’s a sports psychologist; I talked to him yesterday,” Sanchez said (h/t to Jordan Cohn of 95.7 The Game). “He has some interesting

Much was said of San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch’s absences from Ohio State’s pro day last week. Instead of traveling to Columbus to watch quarterback Justin Fields, a candidate to be drafted with the team’s No. 3 overall pick, the duo was in Tuscaloosa for Alabama’s pro day, watching Mac Jones.
Why Jones over Fields?
“[Just] talking with Fields’ agent [David Mulugheta] and everything, we’ll get another one from him too,” Shanahan explained last week, per Kirk Larrabee. “So we’ll be able to see him. That kind of made it an easy decision.”
According to Fields’ agent, that next opportunity will come on
