The San Francisco 49ers officially announced the signings of five undrafted rookies. Four had already been reported on May 1. The other, offensive lineman Alfredo Gutierrez, was assigned to the 49ers as part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway program, which had also already been reported.
San Francisco didn’t draft a linebacker this year. In the sixth round, the team considered doing so but opted to select running back Elijah Mitchell out of Louisiana. Even DeMeco Ryans, the team’s defensive coordinator, advised the team to draft Mitchell over a linebacker.
“Well, you should take this guy. He’s pretty good,” Ryans said, referring to Mitchell, according to assistant general manager Adam Peters.
Two linebackers are part of the 49ers’ undrafted free agent class. One is Elijah Sullivan of Kansas State. The other is Justin Hilliard of Ohio State. The latter had one of San Francisco’s young defensive stars, a former Buckeyes teammate, campaigning for him.
“When we were interviewing (Hilliard) at the Senior Bowl, I took a photo and sent it to Bosa,” Peters told Matt Barrows of The Athletic, “and Bosa (responds), ‘You’ve got to get that guy!’ And we were able to do that.”
Bosa and Hilliard were college teammates for three seasons (2016-18), so there is a good deal of familiarity.
Hilliard appeared in 50 games with seven starts during his six years with the Buckeyes. He registered 84 tackles, nine tackles for a loss, three fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and a forced fumbles, according to information provided by the 49ers.
In 2020, Hilliard appeared in six games with four starts. He racked up 33 tackles, five tackles for a loss, three fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, and an interception after being granted a sixth year of eligibility.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he hopes to see stadiums across the league filled with fans once again. Last season, there were no or limited fans in venues due to the pandemic. For players, the strangeness of playing in empty stadiums could be a thing of the past.
Defensive end Nick Bosa only got to play one game at Levi’s Stadium last season before suffering a season-ending knee injury during Week 2. He caught up with 49ers team reporter Keiana Martin and shared that he hopes to see fans again in 2021.
“It would mean a lot, really,” Bosa said during a virtual one-on-one. “I only got one game at home without the fans, and it was really weird. I love to look back at the film and TV

Jimmy Garoppolo’s days with the San Francisco 49ers may be numbered. He will likely remain with the team through the 2021 season. However, after drafting Trey Lance of North Dakota State with the No. 3 overall pick, it is clear that a change is on the horizon for the Niners.
While most felt that might create an awkward situation in the quarterback room, Garoppolo has made the best of it. In fact, Garoppolo was the first 49ers player who reached out to Lance after the incoming rookie heard his name called in Cleveland, Ohio.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch spoke to the media on Friday night after the team was done making its Day 2 picks. They were asked if they spoke with Garoppolo after selecting Lance. Obviously, the quarterback knew the

The connections to some of the all-time great safeties are strong for 49ers rookie Talanoa Hufanga as he begins his NFL career.
Hufanga, who was selected by the 49ers in Round 5 of the 2021 NFL Draft after a standout career as a safety at USC, is currently at 49ers facilities with other members of his draft class as he prepares for rookie minicamp this weekend (Friday-Saturday). He spoke to reporters on Wednesday about his relationship to three legendary safeties in particular in Troy Polamalu, 49ers legend Ronnie Lott, and 49ers general manager John Lynch.
Hufanga first spoke about Polamalu, with whom he has a well-documented relationship after the

Awkward.
That’s a word that can be used to describe the quarterback situation in San Francisco. The 49ers plan to enter the 2021 season with Jimmy Garoppolo as their starter. However, they surrendered a haul of future draft picks to move up to the No. 3 spot this year. The team selected quarterback Trey Lance of North Dakota State on Thursday night. He will eventually replace Garoppolo.
Yes, that could be an awkward situation in the quarterback room.
Lance doesn’t see it as awkward, though. He sees it as an opportunity. Sitting behind Garoppolo for a season is an opportunity for the young quarterback to learn from a veteran who is very comfortable with the offense. It’s an opportunity to study behind a quarterback who is 26-9 as a starter in the
