About a week ago ago, Matthew Boyd was told he d be making his very first Opening Day start.
Boyd, the expected option for the Detroit Tigers, was first informed in March, a few days before Major League Baseball closed down for practically 4 months since of the coronavirus pandemic. “Then they informed me a few days or so into (summer season camp) here,” Boyd said.
What manager Ron Gardenhire hinted at recently he made official Sunday, announcing Boyd would start the Tigers regular season opener Friday against the Cincinnati Reds.

Boyds household and buddies– who had initially prepared travel to Cleveland for his formerly anticipated Opening Day begin– will rather be viewing back home in Seattle, where Boyd when went to a handful of Mariners house openers as a fan.

Boyd, 29, published a career-best season in 2019, going 9-12 with a 4.56 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 32 starts. Though his performance dipped in the second half, unable to contain the crowning achievement ball, the left-hander took a big step in ending up being a front-line pitcher, striking out 238 batters in 185 1/3 innings.
