The San Francisco 49ers on Monday officially added safety Tony Jefferson on a one-year contract. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the signing Monday morning. In a corresponding move, the 49ers released defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun to keep their roster at 91 players.
Typically offseason rosters are limited to 90 players. The 49ers are afforded an additional roster spot to accommodate OL Alfredo Gutierrez via the NFL’s International Pathway Program.
Jefferson adds veteran depth to a crowded safety room that includes a slew of young, inexperienced players. He’s played 98 games and started 66 across seven NFL seasons after signing on with the Cardinals in 2013 as an undrafted rookie. He spent the 2017-19 seasons with the Ravens, but his 2019 campaign was cut short at five games because of a torn ACL. Jefferson didn’t play last season.
To make room for Jefferson, the 49ers released Boddy-Calhoun. He played in one game on special teams for San Francisco last season while they dealt with a host of injuries in the secondary. They re-signed Boddy-Calhoun this offseason. The 28-year-old has played in 47 games with 22 starts across parts of five NFL seasons.
