CBS Sports | RotoWire staff: Luis Severino, who’s on the IL recovering from Tommy John surgery, played catch on the field ahead of the Yankees game against the Athletics on Saturday. Severino experienced a setback in his return when he suffered a Grade 2 groin strain during his rehab stint at High-A Hudson Valley on June 12th. While it is always encouraging to see Severino warming up with the team, the right-hander’s setback is expected to delay his return to the Yankees by about a month. It’s likely he will be sidelined until at least late July or early August.
CBS Sports | Mike Axisa: There was an unexpected and scary moment in the second inning of the Yankees game against the A’s on Saturday. Third baseman Gio Urshela broke his bat on a swing while the Yankees were at bat, and a wood splinter went into his eye. As bizarre and scary as the injury looked, Urshela was able to flush out his eye and stay in the game — and the Yankees are certainly grateful that he did.
Sports Illustrated | Max Goodman: Yankees first baseman Luke Voit is on schedule to return from the injured list at the start of next week. Manager Aaron Boone confirmed Saturday morning that Voit is on track to rejoin the Yankees on Tuesday. The 30-year-old has been sidelined since he was placed on the 10-day IL with a right oblique strain on May 26th. The 2020 home run champ should be back in the lineup soon, perhaps in time for the start of a home series against the Kansas City Royals.
MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: Aroldis Chapman shut the door in the Yankees’ 7-5 win on Saturday by striking out Matt Chapman in the top of the ninth inning. The 103.4 mph two-seamer was Chapman’s fastest pitch since July 2nd, 2018, and the fastest strikeout pitch in the majors since the Cardinals’ Jordan Hicks had a pitch register at 104.2 mph on April 21st, 2019.
