Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian Top247 cornerback Cam Miller announced his commitment to Penn State on Monday afternoon during a live broadcast on CBS Sports HQ. The four-star recruit also strongly considered Virginia Tech.
The 6-foot, 180-pound Miller is commit No. 22 for head coach James Franklin and his staff in the 2022 cycle, adding to a class ranked No. 2 nationally by the 247Sports Composite.
“Loved the coaches,” Miller told 247Sports of what set Penn State apart. He took his official visit to Happy Valley the weekend of June 25.
“I loved the area up there. College town and it was everything it could offer me. The things Coach Franklin is doing recruiting big-time guys, on top of that the school is great, top-tier education, that was big for me.”
Other offer for Miller included Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Rutgers, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. He is tabbed by the Top247 as the country’s No. 22 cornerback and No. 153 prospect overall. A box score stuffer, he was the Nassau County Offensive Player of the Year and a Jacksonville.com All-First Coast selection. He led Fernandina Beach (Fla.) High to school’s first-ever playoff win as the starting quarterback. He rushed for 1,039 yards, passed for 957 yards and scored 17 total touchdowns while picking off three passes on defense. 247Sports National Analyst Andrew Ivins is real high on him and compares his game to that of Joe Haden.
“Has a college-ready frame at 6-foot, 180 pounds,” Ivins wrote in his evaluation. “Should be able to eventually add some more mass. An accomplished athlete that has spent a majority of his prep career deployed as an option quarterback, but projects as a defensive back at the next level given his ability to mirror and change directions. Tested exceptionally well the summer before his junior season clocking a 4.5 on the lasers in the 40-yard dash. Also posted a 124-inch broad jump. A coordinated football player that makes things look easy on Friday nights no matter what he’s doing. Still has a lot to learn from a technical standpoint on the defensive side of the ball, but already understands how to use body position and angles to cut off routes. Clean sink-and-drive motion allows him to explode out of his breaks and get aggressive at the catch point. Must get better at at finishing off tackles, but not exactly afraid to come up and make a stop in the flats. Adds value as a return man as he’s elusive in the open field and averaged over 7.2 yards per carry his first three years of high school. Will need some seasoning and to be coached up before he reaches his full potential, but athletic profile is one of the best out of any defensive back in the entire 2022 cycle. Could line up at multiple spots in the secondary. Might ultimately settle in as a safety, but he has the hips to get it done at cornerback.”
Miller has already started building a rapport with his future teammates.
“It’s a talented class,” he said. “I feel like Penn State football is going to turn around after this.”
